Enjoy him Texas, you deserve him...

Yeah, well, like most states, Texas is more purple than red. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, though. There will be plenty of opposition to his mass deportation plans. I guarantee you the Pentagon is gearing up for a fight and is not merely setting back on its laurels, waiting for Trump to issue unlawful orders and purge its upper ranks. Similarly, Democrats and other opposition groups, I'm sure, have plans and lawsuits just waiting in the wings. The thing about all of Trump's plans I find the most unsettling though, is that so many people said, "Oh, it's just campaign rhetoric. He's not going to actually enact these policies," yet here we are.

So a 25% sales tax on American consumers, actually...

This is going to hurt us here.  Badly.  For no fault on our part.

Sadly, we get what you all voted for.

Dave

Almost half of us didn't vote for it, yet here we are.

It is ridiculous, given that the first Trump tariffs were pretty disastrous. Nothing seems to sway Trump from his core stances and policies, not even his previous bad results. He will always double, triple, and quadruple down, no matter what. He never has to pay any consequence for his bad decisions, so why not? Any objective analysis you read of the first Trump tariffs pans them terribly. It's unimaginable that anyone could think this is a good idea or defend it, yet they will. The only way this makes sense is if you look at it through the lens of someone who wants to harm America.

Same deal with the pentagon and much of Trump's other overheated campaign promises.  Implementation is not going to be easy, or even possible, even if Trump has the will (which I doubt).  It is not like the Generals are going to roll over like puppies.

So in my view, we as a nation (and our allies Dave) are not going to be OK just because it is "campaign rhetoric."  No, we are going to be OK because any actual implementation is going to look a lot different than the worst case scenarios being floated on the left post-election.

We owe it to ourselves to create a score-card to track some of this stuff.  I'll think about that, but if anyone has a good starting list of campaign rhetoric that worries you, feel free to post it.

I agree with you, and I've said as much in other threads. Yet Trump will try nonetheless. In the process, he will do some actual harm. However, I've also said he's going to cripple his administration with controversy, lawsuits, and opposition. So, I'm mostly OK with him trying. I do not think he will be successful. But I also think it's all so unnecessary and harmful.

  1. Mass Deportations
  2. Tariffs
  3. Abolish the Department of Education (won't happen for many reasons)
  4. Office of Government Efficiency (whose real purpose seems to be dismantling the Washington establishment, swamp, lifelong bureaucrats, etc.)
  5. Using DOJ to go after his political enemies (which, of course, is what he thinks his opponents did to him and others)
  6. Purging the upper echelons of the military ranks (apparently for disloyalty?)
  7. Roll back the clock on anti-discrimination policy (i.e., DEI, wokeness, whatever you want to call it).
  8. Surrendering to Russia in Ukraine
  9. Withdrawing from NATO (not likely since I believe Congress passed a law making it impossible for the President to do this unilaterally)
  10. What else?

"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says that the president-elect’s threat to enact massive tariffs on Mexican imports would lead to mutually assured economic destruction."

It's ridiculous. A trade war with Mexico would be devastating. From what I understand, they are our largest trade partner right now, not China. For example, Ford, GM, Whirlpool, etc., have substantial manufacturing plants in Monterrey, not to mention all the car parts made in Mexico. If you need a new car, I hope you bought it before all this started. And the cost of repairs will go up too. And if you voted for Trump because you wanted lower grocery prices, you will be sorely disappointed. A lot of our produce comes from Mexico. And if you voted for Trump because you thought he would lower housing prices, you will also be sorely disappointed. The tariffs on Canada will undoubtedly raise the cost of building materials, just like in his first term.

Well, YES it is a tariff. You are free to go have a dispute with your own gov't.   wink

https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2024/menu-eng.html

From your gov't website above:

Canada.ca CBSA Trade Canadian Customs Tariff

Customs Tariff 2024

The current Canadian Customs Tariff files show the tariff treatments from countries with which Canada has tariff arrangements as well as preferential tariff treatments for products coming from countries with which Canada has a free trade agreement. They are updated at least once a year, or whenever necessary. The CBSA issues customs notices to the importing community whenever there are amendments.

I'm assuming you can read English since you've been able to write it?

Did you notice the words there "Customs Tariff"

Do you see that word tariff?   Do you know what that means?  It means tariff.

As for your other statement  "in order to be a tariff would have to be only on US goods", all I can say is what??  HUH??  What??

Hmm.... I see nothing there that says in that website that the Customs TARIFF is ONLY on US Goods.

Can you point out where only US goods get a tariff?

BTW, Gee.... it even has your own gov'ts letterhead, doesn't it?

Get a clue.

I know it's pointless to interact with you, but the link you provided says nothing about the "customs tariff" for trade with the US. If you look at the document on the page you provided, it's 1415 pages long, and everything I could find related to trade with the US seems to show that there is no "customs tariff" on trade with the US. The document lists the US as a Most Favored Nation (MFN) trading partner. There is no customs tariff for countries with MFN status. Every good or service in that document where the words "United States" appear lists the customs tariff as "Free" or "N/A."

As David said, you have not proven your claim, and in fact, you find yourself once again in the unenviable position of having provided what you think is proof when, in fact, it appears to show the opposite of what you claim.

First, you seem to be looking at the older document T2024, which has an effective date of 2024-01-01. There is a newer document, T2024-1, with an effective date of 2024-09-01. I checked that one, and it does not list the tariff you are talking about.

Second, even if you look at the older document, you misrepresent what it says. Nowhere in section 4402.90.90 00 does it say the 6.5% tariff applies to the US. The tariff is merely listed without immediate reference to whom it applies. On top of that, the 6.5% does not apply to "Wood charcoal ((including shell or nut charcoal), whether or not agglomerated." The tariff for that category is listed as "Free." The 6.5% you are squeaking about applies to the "Other" category, whatever that means. The section you seem to be quoting is screen-capped below.

Third, I'm trying to understand who the 6.5% applies to and what "Other" means, but this document is massive.

So, in conclusion, you haven't proven your claim and are looking at old data.

Below is the tariff you listed. To the right are the abbreviations for the entities the tariff applies to. In the case of this tariff, one of the entities listed is "UST," which stands for "United States Tariff. " It's listed as "Free"  in the old document T2024 with an effective date of 2024-01-01.

It's not clear what "Other" even means in this case.

I don't think any of this proves your claim; besides, it's old data.
