Question about H-alpha Imaging

Not likely, probably and yes smile.

A 4.5nm filter gives you a very true H-alpha image but it diminishes star light so much that it not only makes it almost impossible to acquire guide stars, but it is also best for high QE NABG cameras like the ST7, 8, 10 and 6303. You might be able to guide with the 10nm but I have an ST2000XM and use an Astronomik 15nm with relatively good guiding results.

Mind you that as you open up the bandwidth you get less of a pure H-alpha signal but 15nm is still quite narrow - the SBIG Red filter is 58nm wide, for example.

Nikon D70, tips-hints, anyone?

Congrats Ivan! I got one for Christmas myself. I've only done some preliminary tests on the sky with it and I did find some issues. The first is that it's red deficient. This might be remedied I think by taking a bigger number of shots than what you plan to use, with longer exposures than the rest, and just using the red channel out of those when you combine them - just like we do with the dedicated cameras. Setting the white balance to cloudy should help too.

The other thing I noticed is that it seems really sensitive in the sodium light pollution band but the IDAS filter should take care of it.

Not all DSOs are H-alpha rich. Those that are not should be better targets.

Finally, a good focusing program is a must. I use Images Plus but there are others.

I've used the D70 more for terrestial shots. Here's some of them:

Congratulations on the new scope Ralph! I'm envious. The ST-10 is a good match for it but so is the ST-2000 with just slightly bigger pixels. And it's $3k or so less.

M42 & Shooting Star? Second light with D70

This is very, very good for alt/az Ivan. You have the focusing down pat - which is a pain I know! The meteor is cool too. This might be even better at say 1200x900 pixels. Soon it will be wedge time and longer exposures. FWIW I couldn't find a remote to get longer exposures and finally found one on e-bay - clean transaction. D70's are great cams.

Quite the nice shot Greg! I have the same setup. Mine is on a wedge now and I use mostly SBIG stuff (can see it here: http://web.tampabay.rr.com/jsuro/observatory.htm ). I would love to spend more time with the D70 but my weather has been so bad lately I use the SBIG for every little chance I do get.

Very nice shot Tyler. You're in deep now smile. I use the same setup - ST2K and Astronomik. I've found that the longer the exposures the better. I normally shoot 900 ~ 1200 seconds in Ha now and I shoot at least 10 of those. That's where it starts paying off. Don't have to stretch as much and DDP works wonders. Remember Ha is really dim so it pays off to expose longer.
