10" Dob Problems?

Posted By Adam Jaffe Back

I just purchased my 10" and already made one modification. I replaced the particle-board mirror cell with a University Optics. I've tryed to focus on far away trees with a 40mm Plossl, and can't get a sharp image. I thought I measured correctly when I installed the new cell, but my thoughts are going down.

How far are the secondary and primary faces supposed to be apart? If I did miscalculate, what would be easier:
moving the focuser and secondary, or the primary?

It's a 10 inch, f/4.5 mirror.

Thanks for any replies!

Help observing M110 and the Double Cluster

Posted By Adam Jaffe Back

Last night, I did some observing from my backyard. I got most of the objects that I was looking for, except for M110 and the double cluster.

How do you observe M110? Do you have to search the limb of M31 with a high power EP? What is the optimum power to use to find the double cluster?

Thanks for any help!

Pronunciations...

Posted By Adam Jaffe Back

Jim:

As a student of German, I'd have to say you're right! Plössl does have an umlaut which makes the 'o' tricky. To say anything with an umlaut, just say the English equivalent, but round your lips (almost like you're going to whistle).

König is another one of those weird german eyepieces. Use the same principle above for pronunciation. Just an interesting tid-bit thought: König is King in English.

Hope I was of some help!

Black Out

Posted By Adam Jaffe Back

I live in Toledo, Ohio...where my power wnet out for 1 hour. Reports said that half of my city was without power. I went outside to observe with my 10" dob, not epecting the Milky Way, but some nice stars. IT WAS BRIGHTER THAN USUAL! My object last night was M71, a glob in Saggita. Usually Sagitta is a little aterism of stars, barely noticable unless loking for it. I couldn't ever make out the neck end of Cygnus. I wished that this would've happened in the dead of night.

P.S. Any reports of how the stars were in NYC? I'm not sure if the power got turned back by night?

Drewling...whoops...that's the keyboard! How do you power that thing!? The legs for the tripod look bigger around than my dog!

I have a question actually about the scope in the background. I have a ten inch dob that I've been wanting to store outside. Is that scope stored outside? What's the cover on it made of? Whare did you get it? Is it waterproof?

Thanks!

Delayed Email Notifications

Posted By Adam Jaffe Back

Hi AstroMart,

Long time user! Thanks for your website. :-)

I think I'm experiencing delayed email notifications and would just like to check-in to ensure that this type of delay is expected from the system.

Two examples:

1) I'm signed up to receive instant email notifications on a couple of categories. Yesterday I received an email at 845p PT for an ad posted at 1034a ET. (10 hour delay)

2) I wrote a reply to an ad using Astromart's messaging system. The seller replied to my message at 501a ET, but I didn't receive an email notification until 101p PT. (8 hour delay)

Thanks!
Adam

Ironically, I received the notification of your post automatically.
