Transit from Skyline Drive, VA

Posted By Jeff Poplin
Mike, Ernie,

Thanks for the kind words.

Was headed toward the NC/VA coastline for a good horizon shot, but Clear Sky Clock nixed that idea. So, it was a 300 mile drive north, out of the haze and humidity. Got above some of it. smile

Morning Star Contest - Venus Returns! (Naked-Eye Sighting Announced)

Posted By Jeff Poplin
I believe the winner of the telescope sighting should be Johannes Schelder with his fantastic "diamond ring" shot from the transit!

ISS with Stellacam EX video camera

Posted By Jeff Poplin
Terrific results on a very difficult target. Congrats.

In case you haven't seen Philip Masding's ISS simulator:

His simulated views, coupled with the actual captured image adds validity and helps pick out details - IMHO.

Keep up the good work!

Free Ebony Star

Posted By Jeff Poplin
Check around your area for cabinet/countertop shops. Make friends with the folks. You may pick up some free "scraps" of textured laminate.

I've purchased a 4x8 foot sheet of Ebony Star from a local custom countertop shop. Not usually a retail outlet, I bought it using the club name. We were rebuilding a 12.5 dob at the time. While at the shop I picked up several free "sink cutouts" which were handy in other scope projects. The particleboard is not much use unless you keep it sealed to the elements. This high volume shop has a large open top trash container and a weekly "dumpster diving" trip found some more handy scraps.

Somehow, I think John Dobson would approve... smile

Carbon Mirror box.........

Posted By Jeff Poplin
Wow, David, that is one sexy looking scope! Now I know what my Obsession would look like with a CF mirror box. smile

BTW, the eyebolts on the handles. I replaced mine with socket head bolts and plastic rosette knobs for clearance through the back door. Now I don't scrape the knuckles or door jamb. grin

Looking forward to see the finished project.
