Re: Planetary Binoviewer

Hello Jack. If you want a buy a great binoviewer from a manufacturer with a lot of happy customers, get the Denk.
There are a few makes to choose from and if you are like most of us, you can't try them all and you don't want to spend good money on something you might regret buying. If you really want to save a couple dollars, place a wanted ad for a Denk on Astromart. With the Denk II soon to ship, somebody might be looking to move up. I have a Celestron 11" SCT and am hooked on binoviewing.

TeleVue, Denkmeier I, or Denkmeier II

Posted By Pat Gillies

Hello Michael. Any of the binoviewers you mentioned above are wonderful instruments. Like you, I have a Celestron 11" SCT (NS11) and a refractor (TV102) and once I had tried binoviewing I was hooked. The only advantage I can see for one company over the other is that Denkmeier offers the complete system, OCS, Starsweeper, etc so you will be sure to get setup right from one company. And Glen is correct, you will need one of these extras for your refractor. By the way, you will probably find that you only need two or three pairs of EP's to cover most of your needs. With my Denkmeier I have found that a pair in the 15mm, 18/19mm, and 24/25mm range is all I need.

Good luck.

Re: Denkmeier (Denk) Standard vs. Denk II

Hi Harry. Just curious, what eyepieces were you using? Did they have rubber eyeguards or eyecups? I couldn't merge at first either. I was using Orthos, 18's and 25's. I found that once I added the rubber cups I had no problems. Don't need them now though.

Trimming a filter to view moons of Mars

Posted By Pat Gillies

Hi Gerry

Can't help you with the filter question but I can tell you that the bar works. From the same article (but off the web site), I made a bar from tin foil an put it on an Ortho 18 mm. It worked.

Binoview or single ep's?

Posted By Pat Gillies

Hello Chris

I almost always use my binoviewer now. My 17mm Naglar collects dust while my 19mm Panoptics catch most of the photons. But that is just me, and my primary scope is an 11" SCT. I not only enjoy the view better but I find binovieweing more relaxing than cyclops mode.

You have to try binoviewing and decide for yourself though. Not everybody finds it the way to go.

Good luck.

Binoview or single ep's?

Posted By Pat Gillies

We haven't scared you off binoviewing have we? As you can see, several of us agree that binoviewing is great. But ask us what equipment is best then you have to stand back and watch the fur fly. You really need to try it for yourself. And as suggested you need to test over a couple nights. One thing I should mention, you will want a chair to use while viewing. You will spend more time on each target.

Yet another this vs that question.

Posted By Pat Gillies

"This is tougher than deciding on a scope."

I know what you mean Jeff. It took me longer to finally decide on a binoviewer than my last scope. I think it is easy to get caught up in the search for that "perfect" or "best of the best" item. All the technical data, advertising hype, and differing subjective opinions tend to
cloud the fact that most of the current crop of binoviewers are all very good.

I was wondering about your scope, what type and size is it?
What are your favourite targets. And where do you do most of your viewing?

Phone conversation with Harry

Posted By Pat Gillies

Hello David

"Harry (of Siebert Optics) informed me that if you purchase his ep’s, he personally collimates and matches the ep’s. He puts a small white dot on the ep for alignment, which makes for easy merging."

Does this mean you can't mix up the eyepieces, ie: put the "left" ep in the "right" side?

"I wonder if Denkmeier does anything like that?"

I was under the impression that with a quality binoviewer and eyepieces, this wasn't neccessary in order to merge easily.

200 (jump) 2000. why??

Posted By Pat Gillies

Well...I had the Celestron 4" refractor and moved up to the TV 102. Although the Celestron was a good scope for the money, the Tele Vue is quality every inch from the focusor to the dew shield. And don't forget the case. smile
