Celestron c8 vs c9.25

Posted By victor truglio

Is there enough of a visual difference between a c8 and a c9.25 to make the switch viewing under fairly light polluted skies??

Meade 102ed vs. The new 102 f7 Chinese

Posted By victor truglio

How would you compare the older Meade 102ed f9 scope to the
new flock of 102ed f7 Chinese scopes.
Lets assume you get a good sample of each.

Switching mirrors need help

Posted By victor truglio

I have a new stock Orion xt8 f5.9 8" dob. I picked up an older discovery 8" dob with a nice Pyrex f6 mirror. The condition of the Discovery tube is soso.
I would like to put the mirror from the Discovery into the xt8 tube. I was told the focal length difference would be about 3/4 of an inch. I measured from the face of the primary to the center of the secondary on both, and sure enough, the difference was 3/4 of an inch. The other issue is the Discovery is a 1.5 inch mirror and the Orion is about 3/4 of an inch. So now I have 1.25" difference.
Now, here's the question. Would a simple focuser extension do the trick for the extra length needed or would I be better trying to use the discovery tube which is a little on the rough side?

Mounting a new focuser

Posted By victor truglio

If there is a problem when mounting a new focuser because of old screw holes, is it ok to mount the focuser a little closer or further away from the primary or is it best to go across as not to change the length?

12" to a 16" dob

Posted By victor truglio

I have a 12" Meade Lightbridge that I use in light polluted skies.
Will a move up to the 16 Lightbridge give me better or worse views factoring in seeing conditions, light pol, etc.
12" aperture is the largest I have used so far.
Thanks

Astro-Tech 102ed doublet or 90 triplet

Posted By victor truglio

I am trying to decide between 2 Astro-tech scopes.
One is the at102ed doublet and the other is the at90 triplet.
Although smaller in size the 90mm utilized fpl-53 for the ed element and the 102 does not specify, so most likely fpl-51 or something similar.
The scope will be used for visual use only.
Priced about the same.
The 102 weighs about 9 lbs where the 90 is heavier at 13+- lbs.

8" Dob vs Celestron c9.25

Posted By victor truglio

I have an Orion xt8 Dob which I have done some work do:
flocked the upper and lower sections of the tube.
replaced the stock secondary with a 1.53 Discovery.
extended the primary mirror distance to get a closer
focusing point with the eyepiece.
I have to say the views are excellent.
How much better would a good c.9.25 with starbright, not
xlt coating give me, if any for general viewing.

I have sold my c8 with xlt coatings which also had good otpics, because the 8" dob was better for plantary and deep sky.
Thanks

Focal length question

Posted By victor truglio

Can someone help me with the focal length of a new scope.
I just picked up a 12.5' f6 Discovery split-tube.
I cant find any listings from Discovery for an f6 only f5

Sound right??

First night with the new scope

Posted By victor truglio

Well, tonight was the first night with the Discovery 12.5 f6, (Terry O mirror). I let the scope sit for an hour then looked at a few targets:
The Moon:
Clear, bright and sharp up to a 7mm TMB in a 2x Barlow.
Thats 544x I have never had any scope any where near that and still give me an image I wanted to look at.
Next M42:
Excellent contrast with a greenisch tint to the cloud.
Then the Pleiades:
With a 40mm Meade 5000 plossl
The only thing I can say is it was refractor like.
Mars was just coming into view but it was still too low.
I have had a 12" Lightbridge and a 12" Starhopper.
I also had a 12.5 Teeter, but it had a mirror made by Mike Unsold which I thought was good at the time.
This Discoery is a big jump in quality.
I havent even flocked the tube or used my black sharpie on the mirror edges.
Maybe I should leave it be.
I was a little concerned with the extra length of the f6, but not any more.

WHAT TO DO

Posted By victor truglio

I was scanning around the Astromart classifieds when I came across a scope.
I opened the ad and is was a scope very similar to one I owned a short time ago and possibly even the same one.
I dont want to give too much info at this time.
Anyway the photo of the front corrector lens showed back to the primary mirror and what appeared to be (2) finger print smudges on the primary.
I asked the seller If those were finger prints.
No response.
Then I went back and checked the ad and the photo was darkened, so it was harder to see.
He then sent me an e-mail stating he didnt know what I was talking about.
Now there is a new photo of the front of the scope on an angle so you cant see the primary mirror.
Not sure what to do at this time.
This to me goes beyond be buying or wanting the scope.
I dont want to see anyone else buy a scope without
the seller disclosing this but I cant be sure because now the photo has been changed.
It sure looked like fingerprint smudges but I cant be 100%
If I am wrong I 100% apologize.
What to do?
