Obama's "Faith Merchandise"

Posted By Mike Strieber

If McCain did this it would be pandering, because it's Obama, it's a brilliant tactical move. I find it a bit ironic that a pro-choice candidate is pandering to Catholics.

President's Morning Statement

Posted By Mike Strieber

I hope you all had the opportunity to see President Bush give a statement this morning on the economy. Eh, what? It was so flat I don't even remember what he said. I don't think he even said goodbye when he walked away from the podium. Don't know about you but I got more out of the 30 second orange juice commercial that preceded him than his 30 second statement on the economy. While I understand the economy sucks right now, I was looking for a bit more enthusiasm, perhaps something a little more reassuring? So here's the question (Colbert-esque).

George Bush...a great president or the greatest president? One word answers only please. wink

"Biden calls paying higher taxes a patriotic act"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080918/ap_on_el_pr/biden_taxes_3

Now that's disturbing. I guess the folks paying less taxes are therefore less patriotic also? Now I'm not big into the gaffe stuff, as much as these folks are in the limelight they'll say some goofy things sometimes. But this isn't a gaffe, it's a philosophy. I just have a tough time rationalizing a thought process like this. If you're going to raise taxes, then do so, don't insult me by telling me it's the patriotic thing to do. I know what you're going to say about the rich, corporations, etc. Don't need to hear it again, and no, I don't even come close to either candidates definition of rich. I'd say you're being a bit naive to think significantly increasing taxes on corporations and the wealthy won't extract a toll on the middle class (in the form of higher prices, jobs, etc.). The patriotic thing to do? Ridiculous. Just rape me of my hard earned wealth, what little I have, and hand me a flag pin, I'm easy.

Obama's Press Conference

Posted By Mike Strieber

It's unfortunate a guy running for president looks more "presidential" than our sitting president. Oh, well. While I don't agree with much of Obama's agenda I certainly give him credit for coming out relatively strongly today. I give him even more credit for having enough confidence in himself to take questions. For the last couple days all these politicians and officials are coming out with benign statements with generic fluff. We all understand that, let's hear some details, at least as they become available. And most importantly allow time for questions. Don't need anymore "hooray" speeches. I won't vote for Obama but I thought he looked pretty good this morning. Not only articulate but appeared to have an understanding of the situation.

Biden only opens mouth to change feet.....

Posted By Mike Strieber

I'm not a big gaffe guy; just thought this was kind of funny...

Biden on the stock market crash in 1929: "When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the princes of greed," Biden told Couric."

I think Herbert Hoover might have taken offense to this guy Roosevelt acting as the president a bit early, perhaps the three or so people that owned TVs in the US then may have drawn the same conclusions. grin

Come on John, don't fail me now...

I think I'm where you guys were a few weeks ago when Palin was announced as McCain's VP choice and all (many) of your post seemed so gloomy with all the pro-McCain hype in the media. Unfortunately today I'm left here wondering why McCain might pull such a stunt; suspend his campaign, make profane announcements that he's got the nation's business to conduct, America first!, announce his hair is on fire...and go to Washington to be a fly on the wall in meetings? Ok buddy, you can do better than that....I think. It's one thing to pull what many perceive to be a political stunt, but to do it poorly? I'm one of those folks that would probably vote for McCain but wouldn't be totally disgruntled if Obama wins. I suspect there are many folks out there like me. He hasn't lost my vote yet but man is he working hard at it. There's plenty of time yet until the election so many boneheaded things are yet to happen; however, Obama may very well come out on top in this fiasco. Just makes the debates even more interesting I guess.

Purely commentary from my foxhole.

Question for all the economic gurus...

Posted By Mike Strieber

I heard something on the radio this morning, don't even know who said it but it was interesting.

There are 330 million people in the US. Why not give each one of them one million dollars? It's a lot less than the bailout package and there would be some serious spending going on. I understand the demand for credit would go down, but not for long. Americans are good at blowing through their cash quickly....especially "free" money. Mortgages, credit cards, personal loans, etc. would be paid off (at least by the responsible citizen). The loaners would be flush with cash again. I could get a new Tak, hell I'd buy one for Rod also. The only downside I can see right now is we would all fall into Obama's "rape the rich in the name of those more worthy of their success" tax plan. Some folks could even use the million to replace the small business they lost due to Obama's plan. It's a win-win.
