Which would you get?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Hi all. I have no experience as far as refractors go. I have an 8" Discovery Dob that just doesn't seem to get much use any more due to time constraints. I am wanting a small refractor for quick 1/2 hour sessions that will be ready to go without much cool down time. My dob can take up to an hour.

Anyway I have narrowed my search down to either the Stellarvue 80/9D on their eq mount with walnut legs or the Celestron C80ED with a Vixen Porta alt/az mount.
I do have experience with an eq mount and setting it up would not be a problem for me.

My main targets would be planetary and lunar as well as open clusters.

Both units would run me just under $1000 after getting a decent quality diagonal.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Jason

1.25" diagonal and barlow???

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Will a 2x TV barlow fit into a TV 1.25" diagonal without hitting the mirror?

Barlow before diagonal?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Does anybody use a barlow before the diagonal. I am set to get my first refractor around July. I will be using a 1.25" diagonal. I would like to use my 2x TV barlow before the diagonal for an effective 3x. I will be using orthos. Will I have any issues with focus? Too much in or out focus?

14mm 5k plossl

Has anyone used the new Meade 14mm plossl? How will it perform at f/7? How is the eye relief?

Thanks,
Jason

Vigneting with 2X/3X barlow

Posted By Jason Paoletti

The 32 and 25 will vignette. The 20 and 3x will a little, but I don't think it is too objectionable. The 15 and smaller won't ,but might be too high of power on some nights. You might want to try the 2.5x Powermate. It has a corrector which will eliminate vignetting in all but the 32mm. Would also give you a nice range of powers

I'm so confused, my head spins

What objects do you like to look at? Planets, deep sky? This will make a difference in what you need.

Winged eyecup

University Optics sells these in different sizes. I think all you have to do is measure the diameter of the barrel. He doesn't list them on his web site as it hasn't changed in years, but the advertisement in the back of S&T has them.
Should have all the sizes you need.

Moon Thurs. ToUcam Test Photo

There is a new review of this web cam over at cloudy nights web site. You might be able to get a lot of tips and info there. I just read it actually and the way I read it you can lower the gain.
By the way, I am wanting to try it too, but I don't have a laptop. Do you think it is a neccesity?

5 or 7,5 mm?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Provided your 10mm ep is of good quality, why not get a quality barlow (TV 2x, Ultima 2x) to get you up to 240x with better eye relief than the 5mm ultima. If you don't go the barlow route you would probably get more use out of the 7.5mm, but at only 160x you will want to be in the 220x-250x range for those upclose looks.
Good luck,
Jason
