So the problem is that the children have trouble getting and keeping their eye lined up, or.... ?

Good Eyepieces for Celestron C6-R

Posted By dan coyle

I have one and it is very forgiving, my 1rpd is not too bad in it and any good plossl, like TV, will work. Depenending on your tolerance for small eyerelief, a short fl ortho will give max res, IMO.
You should recollimate after installing the focuser, and Scope Stuff has a great cheap refractor collimator.
I got a baader contrast booster to diminish the purple, but its a mixed blessing, it does enhance contrast by throwing some out-of-focus energy away, but its a more unnatural view that is left.
This was the first scope where I had enough aperture to be knocked out by stellar colors.
The eq5 mount is a sad, sad joke on this scope, unfortunately.
I found the straight through finder a PITA and went to a rt angle 30mm finder for the FOV.
This long scope with the eyepiece changing height over the right ascension is a real problem for any one out there who doesn't like to/can't easily change their position much.

Evolution of the Astronomical Eyepiece

Posted By dan coyle

Yeah, this is the best thing I have seen, though I'm dying for more, if any one has a reference to more data on the web about eyepiece theory.

Hey Floyd,
is there a way(what do you think of the idea?) to add this as a resource that is linked through the EP Forum?

Burgess Optical TMB Planetary Eyepieces

Posted By dan coyle

Well they have a lot good to be said for them, but I finally got to try my 5mm last night, and it has a glare problem when looking at the Moon's terminator, just like the other, earlier ones. Suposedly that problem was all fixed now! So much for QC.

It also seems to me that it has no more eyerelief than my 12mm ortho.

8 inch dobsonian

I suggest you might consider a 1rpd 30mm,80deg afov for a finder, it won't be in focus on the edge, but it is a great finder, and a poor mans wide field, a 9mm ortho and a 2x barlow will give you planetary observing, and somebody else's suggestion for an 18mm, or so. I use an ortho because out of focus stars bug me, but the field is narrow.
I sold my cheap plossls for pennies, but later regretted not having them for general use for others.
