mak-newt

Posted By Kreig McBride

I use an Orion 6" Mak/Newt and would not trade it for any scope. "Refractor" like images with no secondary color. I often use this scope hand held with a low power eyepiece for stunning views of the sky. High power views are also excellent. Not sure why these scopes are not more popular. Compared to the price of 80mm-100mm "apo" scopes on the market today, a 6" Mak/Newt would make a much better investment in observing dollars!!!!!

Just my 2 cents worth . . . . . .

reducers - wider fields

Posted By Kreig McBride

My original question pertained to the 10" f/17 refractor currently under construction. Seems everyone got distracted about the 9" Celestron.

So, I will again ask about useing a reducer to get wider fields of view with THIS refracting telescope. It appears the best choice is the 55 plossl, 41 pan and the 31 Nagler all resulting in a 0.6 degree field of view, however, the plossl has an 3.2mm exit pupil versus Nagler with 1.8mm exit pupil.

Would a reducer still provide wider AND sharp views? Should I chase down a longer FL eyepiece and use a larger focuser (2.7" or 4")?

Meade 18mm UW 5K vs 17mm Nagler

Go with Uncle Al's televue eyepieces. He is the guy that gave us all such great eyepiece designs that others are trying to copy. He is the guy we should support, not the big corporations that do copies. And YES, I do think his optics are the best and made to the highest standard. You only live once, buy and enjoy the best!!

Thank you for your reply, I am selling a bunch of stuff up at table mountain star party, IF my van can get it all up the hill. :-)

What refractor do you bring to a star party?

Hello Bill,

You will almost always see a 6" refractor brought by a guy from the Spokane area and I always bring my 8". Stop by for a chat when you arrive, I am not hard to find.

The most perfect telescope I have owned. You?

My favorite scope is 8" f13.3 D&G refractor, just love the images (doublet) and love swinging this scope around the skies (Dob mounted).

My best images come from a 5" f/12 D&G refractor and planetary views through Unitron eyepieces in a Unihex are simpy stunning.

I hand hold a 6" Mak/Newt with a 40mm eyepiece for sweeping the skies. Absolutely the best!!

There is no perfect scope. There are many perfect scopes.
