Re: M27 with DSI

Hello Floyd,
I am not sure about the hot pixels. There is significant noise due to lack of exposure. I did take dark frames and hot pixels were not prevalent in the raw exposures, just lots of stars and noise. Are there any "pixels" in particular that you think are hot?

EDIT: I thought that I should also add I used a clipping algorithm often used for cosmic rays. Since the raw images did not line up perfectly the hot pixels that were there got moved around and should have been clipped with statistics from 13 images.

Thank you, yours is better. I hope to get more than half an hour before too long. I think an hour and a half would suffice.

Again thank you and nice image yourself.

I too have modified my eq6 with an mts-3. Your guiding looks great. What modifications have you made to you mount exactly? I am using the conrad gears but have an error every 40 secs of about 1".

Anyway sorry about the questions.

Nice shot. Some day I would like to get some color filters. The color in you image makes it much easier to discern details.

Some one mentioned Celestron. Are they not owned by synta, the company that supplies orion?

H-alpha filter question

Posted By Eric Pellegrini

Longer exposures should not be required with narrow filters so long as the emission line is not cut by the filter.

This is going to be the case with these wider bandpass filters. For research we use filters with even narrower band passes than these and still get all of the Ha.

Now you will contaminate the image with NII emission at 654.8nm and 658.3 if the filter covers these. The only filter to block this to an extent will be the Custom Scientific. But consider that this emission is usually ~4% of Ha and will be a minor contribution.
Also please consider the F ratio of you telescope. The filter transmission was calculated at a given f. By using a lower f ratio you shift the peak of the curve and with the 4.5 nm you may cut some Ha. With the 10nm you are safe, as I believe with the 6. However with the 4.5 you may have a problem if you are using a very different f ratio. I believe that the filters are usually calculated around f10.

Check out the yahoo group on the EQ6. After the Heq5 was introduced it was included in the topics.

Manned Missions to Space

Posted By Eric Pellegrini

I have to say that I used to like the idea of manned missions. Then I learned that there is only so much money to go around. I am currently thing to get funding for a number of projects, unfortunately all the projects have been canceled due to budget shuffles to get man on mars. This is hurting astronomers and astrophysics much more than many people realize. All around the country many programs and research areas are being axed to pay for the exploration.
I am hoping that the harm is not to great.

Manned Missions to Space

The rover may not have curiosity but the people running it do. They are have a very suseptable nature to the harsh radiation on mars because of no magnetic field where the rovers, they don't mind that so much. Although if we are talking about spending more on manned missions with out taking away from current research I am all for it. I think we spend a rediculous amount on defense.
