Digital Setting Circle Interface

Posted By Glenn Gordon

Hi,

Can anyone tell me who manufacture an interface which would go between some US Digital Encoders I have on my scope and a planetarium program running on a palm pilot?

Thanks,
Glenn

DSC Calibration Question

Posted By Glenn Gordon

I added DSC's onto my dob. I am running a Bbox equivalent encoder interface and a PDA running "The Sky Pocket Edition" software.

After I do my aligment and have no trouble locating DSOs, however the planets are not where the PDA thinks they should be; on the ecliptic plane but an hour or so ahead. I am trying to figure out if this is a time zone or daylight savings time issue caused by the PDA's internal clock.

Another issue, when I select an object from the database, I have an option to slew to it using some graphic bars that get smaller as I get closer. However the RA is off by 180 degrees and the Dec is off by 120 degrees. Any thoughts on that issue?

I am new to DSCs so any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Glenn

Can Free Will exist - or is it all in our heads?

Posted By Glenn Gordon

Quantum mechanics sets forth a probabilistic framework. But that hardly helps with the question of free-will. Should our freedom just be a matter of probabilities, just some random swerving in a chaotic system?

Are we merely gears in a big deterministic physical machine or are we just some random swerving?

Truss Material. Aluminum bar??

Posted By Glenn Gordon

Steve,

Using .75" Dia, .049" Wall 6061 Aluminum tubing will work fine for a 12.5" f/5. Here is a link to the one I just finished...

Energy Bill

What do you think are the most promising alternate energy sources? Hydrogen? Solar? Geo-thermal? Fusion? Zero-point? etc...

"I was wondering what happened.

To many windows open.

Any thoughts?"

Andrew,
Not too many windows. There is a glitch in the Astromart software. Lets say you're browsing this forum (not logged in) and you go to post a message. The software takes you to the login window, you log in, and then it takes to to a reply window which is for the EQUIPMENT FORUM, regardless of which forum you were browsing prior.

It would help to avoid postings in the wrong forum if the Astromart programming were corrected so that the user is taken back to the forum that they were actually trying to post in.

How many cheap scopes before......?

Posted By Glenn Gordon

After my binoculars, my first scope (still my current scope) was a 12.5" f/5.

I realize this is a large scope for a beginner, but I wanted a scope that would last me a lifetime and I liked the engineering challenges associated with building my own scope.

I am still learning to use it, still learning the sky, and loving every minute of it :-)

Here it is...

"Why does it always seem to come down to a "lesser of two evils" vote?"

Jake,
At least you're smart and realize that voting for the lesser of two evils is still a vote for evil.

Voting for what you don’t want is a “wasted vote”.

Most people don't vote their hopes, they vote their fears.

Digital Setting Circle Interface

There is a program called "2Red" which turns the handheld's default colors to red and black, so you can use it at night without sacrificing your night vision.
