Telepod tripod question

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Just a quick question,

Will the telepod tripod support a unistar or other mount, or just the telepod? I was considering a bogen, but the telepod tripod is much more affordable.

Thanks for your input,
Marc

Telepod with an ED 80

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Will my new ED 80 work on a telepod head?
Do I need tube rings or will it just screw right on?

Thanks,
Marc

Astonished & Disappointed - Please Comment

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Dont be too disapointed gary,

You just have to realize that the light coming from these objects is really hitting your eyes. No matter how incredible the hubble photos are that I look at, it never excites me as it does to look at the same object through my telescope. You had it handed to you at the viewing party. After you get your own scope and you actually have to find the object you want to look at after an hour of searching, you will really be astounded by the view you see. Astronomy isnt about going from one object to another in a computerized scope, its about feeling the excitement of actually finding the object. I recommend to any beginner to get dobsonian scope as your first scope; it captures all of what astronomy really is. Dont fall into the trap of Go-To scopes that take all of the fun out of the search.

Best of luck to you, and dont give up yet.

Low power worthwhile?

Posted By Marc DiMarco

ok, thanks guys, one more question;

If my dialated pupil is not 7mm, am I loosing arperture of my scope, or am I just seeing less FoV? I've heard it both ways, and don't know what to believe. Can I still get all of the brightness out of the center of the field when I'm looking at the center, or does it just cut down on the arperture of the scope that I'm effectivly using?

Sorry to phrase it twice, just hard to get my idea out here wink

Thanks again

Feathertouch focuser question.

Posted By Marc DiMarco

The length of drawtube does matter. If it is too long and a good deal of it is in the scope (the light path)while you are viewing, you will reduce the amount of light you gather and might recieve some vignetting. I have a meade starfinder 16 in f4.5 and it needs a drawtube length of 4.5 inches, so I couldnt use a feather touch, I had to get a JMI focuser that could accomadate my needs.

To test drawtube length take the scope out without a focuser and measure the distance you have to hold the eyepiece out from the tube to get a focused image. (do this on mars and a deep sky object to get a good range). Then you can use those numbers to determine what a good draw tube length would be. When in doubt, go a little longer.

collimation issue

Posted By Marc DiMarco

www.starastronomy.org/TelescopeMaking/perkins.html

Visit this site ^ to make your own sight tube collimation tool. To find out how long to make it, multiply the inside diameter of the bottom of the pipe by your telescopes focal ratio.

Hope this helps,

What did I see and how can I see it better!!!????

Posted By Marc DiMarco

First off did you mean thanks marc for the post with vega? Not that recognition matters to me, just want to know if your referring to my post. Secondly, you can't see andromeda like that even with $7000 dollars of equipment visually. A picture like that is a combination of 5 time lapse exposures spaning 5 minutes each with a CCD camera, even with a 10 meter telescope you could not see that much detail with your eye.

I need a case for my Orion 80ED

Posted By Marc DiMarco

Tybee,

I know this is off topic, but how are the views in the 80ED?
Planets, DSO's, Moon? I am thinking to purchase this or something similar for planetary and wide field observing.
Any help appreciated.
