FeatherTouch Question

Posted By Rob Moerschel

Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting a feathertouch focuser upgrade. But, just a quick question. Does the fine focus feathertouch mechanism actually result in a sharper image of the object compared to a standard focuser, or does it just make it earier to achieve a fine critical focus (ie. high power) on the object?

Thanks,

Rbo

What are we celebrating?

Posted By Rob Moerschel

This is my first time posting in this forum and I'm not sure if this
has been discussed before...but I'm trying to decipher what season are we celebrating by looking at public institutions. This is supposed to
be an American holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Instead,
I get the perception of a clownish lighted meaningless festival. Now,
I'm by all means go avid church goer or hard core Christian, but nevertheless still a Christian. When I go out shopping I want to visually see "Merry Christmas" not Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings. How about major radio and media networks.
I'm tired of listening to Jingle Bells, Frosty the snowman and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I want to hear Away in the Manger, Oh Come All Ye Faithful and Hark the Herold Angels Sing. I believe privately people can display there freedom of religion of their choice. However, public institutions (malls, banks, police stations, city hall, etc) should clearly display Christian symbols. This country was founded by Christians and thats the way it ought to be. Politics and religion should not integrate if political correctness is driving this unpatriotic and disrespectful campaign... just look at what its doing to our middle east policies...but I won't go there. The boycotting has already begun. I don't now...maybe its me. What does everyone else think?

Greaseless focusers

Posted By Rob Moerschel

I currenly have a standard 2.7" AP focuser from the mid 90's before feathertouch and greaseless focusers emerged into the market. In the past during the cold winter months here in PA, my current focuser becomes extremely tough to turn the focuser knobs. How do the greaseless focusers perform in the cold weather? Also, is it worth it to upgrade to a feathertouch in a f/8 scope primarily for visual observing planets at high powers?

Thanks for your help,

Rob

Holiday season

Posted By Rob Moerschel

Christmas trees being referenced as Holiday trees. Christmas lights called Winter lights. Is a Christmas tree or a Holiday tree
part of any other religious holiday other than Christmas? (ie. Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc) What about Christmas lights or Winter lights?

Re: Fox News, O'Reilly declare war on Christmas

Posted By Rob Moerschel

Here's a few holiday song titles Fox news can incorporate into their web page that hyperlink to an mp3 downloadable file. I'm sure the "minds" at Fox will be overwhelmed to accommodate them.

We Wish You a Merry December
Little Drummer Person
Oh, Come all ye Faithful, Agnostics and Atheists
Oh Holiday Tree, Oh Holiday tree
Frosty the Snowperson of An Indistinguishable Gender
Rudolph, the Reindeer with the Facial Appendage of a Different Color

Seasons greetings and happy holidays to all. BTW, Don't forget to hang those blinking winter lights around the holiday tree. Now, if you excuse me, I've got a holiday party to attend.

For the most part, I agree with Bush's policy regarding his tax cuts. However, with respect to job growth and the economy... I disagree. Just like the unemployment rate, the total job growth statistics are meaningless by themselves. Answer this question with respect to new jobs created over the past 6 months: On average for these new jobs, how much more disposable income per worker is available to purchase the same goods/services relative to new jobs created 10 years ago adjusted for inflation and/or the consumer price index (whichever is higher for each financial accounting item)? Convince me there is at minimum a slight disposable income increase now, and I'll agree our economy is in good shape with respect to new job growth. Regarding our current jobs, average hourly earnings up 3.2 percent over the last year are not keeping up with CPI at 4.3 percent. Consequently, real incomes are falling. When the price of goods increases relative to the price of labor, we can not maintain our standard of living. Thousands of high skilled white and blue collar labor workers are now accepting lower wage jobs which assists in maintaining a low unemployment rate. Having increasing double income households to maximize disposable income, and spending house equity due to low interest rates are not acceptable interim or ongoing solutions for keeping our economy afloat. The administration's based policies are steering our country into this 3rd world direction and redistributing our wealth worldwide. To be honest, the current Democratic Party policy ideas wouldn't be an improvement. The problem with both parties is the high similarity with respect to their foreign and domestic agenda goals. The primary deviations between these parties is embedded in their separate polices on how to best accomplish these agenda goals through propaganda and sleeping with their perspective special interest groups.

Dob tracking

Posted By Rob Moerschel

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 10" Discovery PDHQ Split DOB. I'm very impressed with the optics, focuser and tube. However, tracking planets at high powers is a slight problem. It's lacking buttery smooth action and difficult to retain the image in the field of view from up/down left/right movements. Does anyone have any easy suggestions to improve the tracking performance of the mount?

Thanks for your input,

Rob

Edmund RKE vs. UO Ortho

Posted By Rob Moerschel

I had several focal lengths of the UO orthos. These eyepieces provide good images for the price on the planets and the moon. They exhibit much better contrast than the TV Nagler Type 1 eyepieces (4.8mm, 7mm) on these objects, and a tad sharper and brighter. Never tried the RKE line.

Orion XT10 - Where's the market?

Posted By Rob Moerschel

All,

Thanks for everyone's feedback. The purpose was to find out which level of people are utilizing this scope, and how they feel about the bells and whistles related to the optics. Personally, believe its a great value, but prefer the better optics. Now if Orion would compliment the current XT10 w/ a an enhanced coating version, I think that would give them a competitive edge. I'm not aware of any other manufacture that produces a new light weight (< 60 lbs) 10" DOB w/ enhanced coatings and can ship it out within a few days after ordering one. I'm very impatient, as I went through panic attacks and convulsions awaiting for my AP 130 to be delivered. I don't think I can go through that again.

Clear skies,

Rob
