Hi Markus- We talked a while back about repairing my big Russian 20x110. I have a set of the Sards and have this to say about them. They are really impressive, but they are very heavy. THey are the only binoculars that to my eye almost have a steroscopic effect looking at terestial objects. To my eye the optics look perfect. They have rubber eye cups that are in great shape. As far as edge performance, everyones eyes are different, but to me this is no problem on edge performance. For astro use, they are very heavy and need some kind of a mount for more than a 15 second look. They are definitely a piece of history.

Hi Dave- I am impressed with the results of your images. That astrograph has beautiful resolution. your guiding is great, but how did you get Mars to stand still? What is the apparent size of the comet considering your image scale? If that comet is out that far, with the tail that you are getting, maybe it is going to be a great comet. I cannot wait to see your follow up exposures. Thanks

Hi Dave- Your photos are incredible. Does the comet tail still seem to be the 7 arc minute size you mentioned last week? Considering we are seeing this tail foreshortened, it must be very long considering where it is in the solar system. I don't ever remember seeing anything published that showed a comet that far out showing a tail such as you are imaging. Keep up the good work. I am back in Rio Verde and in the bright sky, so I have not tried with the big binos yet. How is the moon affecting your imaging?

Hi Allen- That is an amazing observation. If you have a solar filter take a look at the sun. It has the most amazing group of sunspots that I have ever seen. I have not seen this mentioned anywhere on the forum and I hope everyone will get a chance to see them. I will have a go at Venus tomorrow, but our transparency is not too good with the Phoenix smog.

Thanks for a very beautiful picture. Did you ever try to photograph the gegenschein? I have tried to see it from Alpine, but only looked in the middle of the night. Dave Erickson says to look for it early. Anyone else have any luck?

Solar Filters for Zeiss 20x60 Binoculars?

Hi Paul- First get yourself some Bader Solar filter sheets from Astrophysics. Take your Binos to Home Depot and find some PVC fittings that will fit over the barrel of the objectives, then find some fittings that will fit inside those and cut your solar film to fit. Now you are in business, but 20x is trouble if you are going to hand hold them. I have 10x50 that are so equipped and are used every clear morning. THey work great, but I still need to lean on something to steady even 10x.

I believe all those early Cave mounts used Boston Gears. These are still readily available.
