Solar Scopes

Posted By John Sellers

I may be in the market for a solar scope but need some advice. Meade currently has the P.S.T. Coronado priced at $499 and the Solarmax 60T for $1999. In your opinion does the Solarmax give that much better views of the sun than the PST ???? Also, what about this LUNT Solar System, currently featuring the LS60T/H for $899 bucks. I've never had this type of scope before so I need advice. I am interested in seeing the prominences, sunspots, filaments and flares. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks .......

Collimating my SCT

Posted By John Sellers

I need some help and advice here. I recently purchased the older orange tube 8" Celestron. I am enjoying the views but I notice that using high power that some collimating is needed. I collimate my reflectors all the time, so I know how to do that, but how does one go about collimating the Schimdt Cassegrains? My Celestron has the three small allen screws on the outside part of the central mirror holder. I suspect those are the adjusters. I have heard of Bob's Knobs. Are these easy to install? I have all the collimating tools for the reflectors, including the laser beam. Can these tools be used? Thanks for any help or advice. John

Celestron 9.25 vs. Classic 1970 orange 8 Celestron

Posted By John Sellers

Hi everyone, I am considering the purchase of the 9.25 Celestron CPC. My question is just how much more on the visual side does the 9.25 scope give me over my 8 inch Celestron. I have one of the older Celestron which gives very sharp views and I am just wondering if the larger Celestron will give me that much more. I do not want to go larger because of the weight question and I am strictly a visual observer Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Unitron Find

Posted By John Sellers

If you can believe it, I found a 4" Unitron refractor at a yard sale. Not in good shape but I believe it can be restored. I have been in contact with Berry at D&G to evaluate the OTA and to check out the lens. On a quick look I find the lens dirty but it seems not to be damaged. What are my options?? Should I sell it off as parts or have the the Unitron restored ?? What is the best market out there ?? Restore the scope or sell off the parts ?? I would not be restoring it myself but would turn that chore over to the experts. Opinions would be appreciated.

Questar

Posted By John Sellers

Hi all. I just bought a 1973 3.5 Duplex Questar from a friend, which appears to be in great condition. I eventually would want to sell it. My question: Is it best to have Questar Corporation service this scope ???? The cost is $450. Will this service add the value of the service to the selling price of the scope ???

8mm Ethos

Posted By John Sellers

I am considering purchasing an 8mm Ethos. I would mainly use this eyepiece with my 9.25 CPC Celestron. I have some reservations because this eyepiece would produce close to 300x. Would that be too much power for general viewing in the Celestron ??? My friend has the 13mm Ethos, which we use almost continuously for the entire evening of viewing on all subjects. I would want to do the same with the 8mm Ethos, but I am wondering if I can really use the 8mm for general viewing rather than occasional having to use it for close up viewing. Any thoughts out there ?????

Correct Storage

Posted By John Sellers

I have a CPC 8" Celestron and I keep it in a storage bag, but in order to store it in this storage bag, it needs to be kept in an upright position with the OTA folded down between the fork mount with the rear end facing up. My question is whether or not it is OK to store it in this position with the mirror always in this position. Any suggestions are welcome.

Kevin, in Harrisonburg/Staunton is the Shenandoah Valley Stargazers.....we have an observatory in Stokesville. It is an active club and we would like to have you as a member. Check out our website at valleystargazers.com. By the way, you are moving into a very dark sky area.........

Dale, I'll be there, too, along with several other Shenandoah Valley Stargazer Club members. I've never attended this one but knowing the area it must be a fairly dark place. I plan on bringing my 12.5 Starmaster if the weather reports are encouraging.

Used Equipment Prices Vs. Retail

Posted By John Sellers

Tim, yes I agree with you. For that small amount of discount it is not worth going used. I, too, was going to buy a used telescope and the seller wanted close to retail price. Although I had to wait awhile, I decided to go new to take advantage of the company guarantee, etc.
