Here it is - 160EDF

Very nice! It will be at least 2-3 years before my name comes up on the list... One thing doesn't look right though, in the first picture there is a stong reflection from the flash to the dew-shield, to the lens and right back to the camera. I can see that the dew-shield is baffled but why is it so shiny?(anodized aluminum?) It should be painted flat black.

Focal length of Vixen 120mm f/8.3 *objective only*

Posted By Oren Soffer

Don't know the exact answer and it might vary a *little* from one sample to another but, point it to the moon and place a piece of paper about 46" behind it and try to get a sharp image, that will be your focal plane. You can do the same with the sun but of course (as I'm sure you know...) the heat will burn your paper and might start a fire. Hope it helps.

Which to choose?!?!?!?!?!?!

Posted By Oren Soffer

Randy,

To add a twist to the subject, once I was looking at the Horse-Head through my 17.5" f/4.1 and we compared the 31T5, 30 Widescan Type-II and the 35 Pan. The best contrast was with the 35. I think it really depends on your sky. If you have noticeable amount of light pollution, the higher power will help, but if the sky is truely dark, the lower power might win as long as you don't get to huge exit pupils (maybe 10mm or more?). Jay, if you are concerned about contrast, compare a 26 Plossl to a 32 Plossl at a dark site, and you will get the idea. The only difference will be 52° vs. 82°.

As soon as I convinced my wife that this is the last telescope I will ever buy, he tripled the price. Now I will have to sell even more equipment to cover it. cwy

Pinched lense- can it deform lense?

Posted By Oren Soffer

Dave,

Let me get this right... You prefer to use the scope with the lens pinched only so you don't have to re-collimate in the future? Why collimate to begin with, if you don't care how it performs? While I don't believe it will cause a permanent distortion of the lens, I think the lens (especially the soft ED glass) can crack under extreme temperatures or temprature change. I would loosen the screws a bit, it should still keep collimation pretty well for a long time.

Installing a chromacor in the drawtube

Posted By Oren Soffer

Hi Bill,

A while back John Biretta e-mailed me info about a semi-permanent way he found to install his chromacor inside the draw-tube. Wrap few layers of painter's tape around the chromacor until it's a tight fit inside the tube. As simple as that. Obviously, you need to make sure that the diagonal is perfectly square with the tube. He sent me few pics. Here is one, I'm sure he wouldn't mind me posting it, he is always happy to help others.

Mt Pinos is Open!

Posted By Oren Soffer

It sure was a great observing night, maybe to compensate for the bad weather we experienced during the last year. I've never seen the Blue Snowball with so much details, it seemed like more power was making the object bigger with more details visible, but it didn't make it much dimmer to my surprise. I guess the contrast gain with higher magnification compensated for the larger image brightness reduction. A small correction, the two TMB's we brought were 152 and 175. The Dob was 17.5".
