TAK FS-78 focuser question

Posted By John Boyd

Charles,

Unfortunately they are not the same size so accessories that screw directly onto the focuser are not compatible. I have the same combination (FS-128/78). It is a great combination (IMHO).

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions I may be able to help with. ([email protected])
Hope that helps some.

John

Tak super system up and ready

Charles,

I love my FS128/78 combo. Typically I will mate the FS-78 with a SP mount and it makes an excellent travel combo. I am very happy with both scopes. You can check them out at:

in the equipment section.

Money Order lost?!

Posted By John Boyd

Ivan,

Do not get too concerned yet. As you stated it is the Holiday rush and things do get delayed. The 30 day thing is pretty standard for Money Orders and Cashiers Checks from what I have encountered.

I had a similar situation about a year ago with an International MO (USPS) that I sent to one of our friends up in Canada. I checked with he PO and they did not consider it lost for 30 days, then you could file a claim.

To make a long story short...2 days before the 30 day limit, I received an eMail that the recipient had received it. He could see by the date stamp on the envelope that it was in fact mailed on the date I told him.

I also had a letter take 2 weeks to get across town. Of course everyone knows how big Titusville is so it was no suprise : )

Hopefully the other party understands that sometimes these things happen and is willing to wait for the arrival of the MO. On the other hand you sent the MO "last year" and it still has not arrived : )

Keep the faith baby,

John

PS Happy New Year.

Celestron (Vixen) refractor Super Polaris drive

Posted By John Boyd

Don,

The only drive systems I am aware of that were sold by Celestron when they were selling the Super Polaris mount were the Vixen motors and controllers. There were two systems sold, the dual axis drive system and the single axis drive system.

The later drives used with the CG series mount were different and not made by Vixen. The CG5 drive system could be adapted to the SP mount.

Here is a picture of the Celestron/Vixen dual axis drive system sold for the Super Polaris mount. Note the bracket. Early SP mounts required this bracket to attach the dec motor. Later version of the SP had the bracket built in.

Super Polaris Mount question

Posted By John Boyd

James,

See the 4 set screws (2 on each side) that hold the lower (narrow) cover plate on. Loosen those until you can remove the cover plate. The original Vixen motor dovetail sits in that grove and is adjusted and held in place with the 4 set screws. There is also a long bolt that passes from the back of the mount (opposite the motor) that holds the original vixen motor into place. The 4 set screws can be used to fine tune the mesh of the gears to minimize slop.

The CG-5 motors can be mounted to the SP but they are not identical and may require a bit more tinkering.

Hope that helps some,

John

Mounting a dovetail to an older Vixen GP

Posted By John Boyd

Don,

The mount shown in the photo is NOT a Great Polaris (GP) or Super Polaris (SP) mount. It is the Vixen Polaris mount. The saddle is very different between the two. There is a significant difference between the two. No only in the casting itself, but in the hole spacing. I am attaching a photo that shows the Polaris and Super Polaris mount. Someone could fabricate a dovetail to attach to the mount, but you would want to be sure they are making it for the correct mount. Since the Polaris mount has a cradle built into the saddle, any dovetail adapter would have to be taller to allow for clearance for the dovetail.

Hope that helps some,

John

Wow Herb...I am suprised that one didn't get past you!

No stars for originality on that one, but he did say he was from CA. : )
