My messy camp site at the local club's star party. That's my pickup with all of its doors open. I was trying to trap a bear...

BTW, that's a TEC 140 on a Unistar mount in the foreground, and behind it is a pair of Fujinon 16x70 binoculars on a UA Unimount Light Deluxe.

As I am losing my account because I have a netscape email address, I want to say goodbye to all the nice people with whom I have had contact on this site over the years. I appreciate the opportunity I've had to visit this excellent site and I want to thank Herb personally for maintaining Astromart for us amateur astronomers. I will look into other email sources that may be more appropriate soon. However, I want everyone to know that I have always tried to accomodate the rules, and my email source has not been in the banned list, up to now. I hope I reurn someday soon and I wish Herb and Astromart the best in my absence.

Atlas EQ Mount

I have an Atlas mount (used) being shipped to me for delivery sometime next week. I am planning to mount a 25 lb. refractor on this mount, and other, smaller scopes, as well. My questions are:

1. What mods will significantly improve this mount's basic performance?
2. Where can I find information that will enable me to install DSCs, if I should go this route at a later time?
3. Is there an improved goto system for this mount in the works, and when will it be available?

I am essentially interested in improving this mount's performance as time goes on, and any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks!

I just ordered an Atlas Goto from Anacortes! I have been wanting a heavier mount than my GM 8 and I think this will fit the bill. Oh boy!

I just received a Meade 114 NT reflector today. It arrived in good shape for a touch less than $50.00 including shipping from Meade's factory outlet. It came with tube rings, a 6x30 finder and bracket, and two very decent eyepieces. It appears to be a very well made little OTA and has received several recommendations for its optical and mechanical quality. Initially, the only real modification...if you can call it that...will be to lubricate its mostly plastic rack and pinion focuser. Later, flocking the interior of the tube will be a good idea. I think it would make an ideal first scope or a good backup scope for an advanced amateur.

Here is a picture of it still in its box.

No Email Responses to Ads

I am not receiving email responses by interested parties to my ads. I discovered this was happening when someone PMed me. How can this problem be corrected? I have been a member of AstroMart for many years and this has not been a problem until now.

I'm not surprisd by your results; Fujinon makes a quality product. I am, however, impressed by your fortitude. Eighteen degrees is COLD when you are trying to do delicate work. My hat's off to you!

Late last year I ordered a Giro-2 mount head from Jocelyn which I was assured was in stock. After many phone calls, many excuses, and more than three months later, the mount finally arrived. I have to say Jocelyn was always pleasant when we spoke, and I really wanted to believe this delay was just my bad luck...that APM-USA was generally prompt, helpful, and friendly under most other circumstances. I can see now that my experience was much more common than I had supposed. While I am usually sympathetic to retailers because it is much easier to hand out complaints than it is compliments, I must say that I will not give APM-USA my business again. In fact, I am still waiting, these many months later, for the case I ordered (twice!) from her to hold the Giro-2. I guess I shouldn't hold my breath...

While I have no direct experience with these particular binoculars, bear in mind both will require sturdy mounting for effective use. It is advisable to set aside enough money from your budget to purchase a good, solid mount. You will be much more satisfied with your choice, whatever it will be, when it is mounted securely on a proper mount. I personally use a Universal Astronomics Unimount and I recommend it highly, but there are others on the market which will do the job for you, too. Best of luck with your choice.
