Attaching GM-8 SP saddle plates to a Giro-2

Posted By Greg Elspas

I just purchased a Giro-2 DX and would like to attach a Losmandy GM-8 SP saddle plate for quick mounting/release of my Losmandy Dovetail mounted scopes.

Has anyone done this? Do you use one of the existing outside holes on the saddle plate and just drill out an appropriately spaced on in the middle? What is the size of the mounting screws?

I'd appreciate pictures of the completed operation if someone has done this.

Thanks

Camera/display use at Star Parties

Posted By Greg Elspas

Since BFSP will be my first star party I have a question about the use of CCD cameras/TVs. How does one use something like a Stellacam/Mintron camera with a small TV display without offending? Is something like a red screen on the TV display in order?

Binoscope/Binoviewer with refractors

Posted By Greg Elspas

Strictly talking refractors; if I had a choice between a 6" APO with a quality binoviewer or a binoscope comprised of two 5" APOs. Which setup would transmit more light to the eyes? Visually, would it be that noticeable of a difference? I can tell the difference when using a binoviewer on my 5" APO as opposed to a single eyepiece but it got me wondering.

EP recommendations

Posted By Greg Elspas

I'm looking for EP recommendations for a binoscope using two 5" f6.4 refractors. Let's say 3 pairs (one high, one medium, and one low power pair).

Particularly, looking for 1.25" EPs that provide:
- high transmission
- very flat field
- approx. 60-65 deg. FOV
- long eye-relief (i.e 15-20mm)
- parfocal

I really like the Pentax XLs/XWs but figure that the eyecups are probably too wide to allow for proper interpupilary spacing. And that is really a shame. Am I wrong on this?

Winged eyeguards for Nagler T6s?

Posted By Greg Elspas

I am using Nagler T6s for binoviewing and love 'em with one small problem. The eyecups don't block out stray light very well. Anyone know where I can find nice winged eyeguards that will fit the T6s?

Source for thumb screws (small quantities)?

Posted By Greg Elspas

I'm looking for a source for metric and standard knurled head thumb screws (metal) in small quantities. I already tried McMaster-Carr and for the sizes I need I would have to order packs of 25 or 50. Any suggestions?

Minus violet filter

Mike,
You might want to check out the Sirius Optics NPC filter.
It is a combination minus violet/contrast enhancement filter. It is currently available from APM
(http://apm-us.com).

BORG 50 F5

Posted By Greg Elspas

Joe,
I just recently purchased a Mini Borg and so far have been very pleased with it's performance. It provides very sharp views and it is extremely light which is nice for mounting atop my Borg 100ED. I plan to use it primarily as a guidescope and as a solar scope in combination with a Solarmax 40 filter. The only drawback may be that with certain EP/Helical focuser combinations there may not be enough travel for focus. You can compensate for this using the scope's draw tube. So far, I have not had this problem.
I believe it would work very well with your ST237 for wide field imaging.
My suggestion is that you check out the Borg forum on Yahoo:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/borgtelescopes

There are individuals on the forum that have Mini Borgs and can provide a lot of useful info. By the way, Hutech is discounting all scope and component sales by 10% until Dec. 31st.

Regards,

Greg

Most Aperture in the Grab and Go Category

Posted By Greg Elspas

Owen,
I too had an AT1010 but wanted an APO with a little more aperature. I was on the wait list for an SV85S when it occurred to me that I could find a Borg 100ED used for much less than a new SV85S. I now have more aperature than either the AT1010 or SV85 in a scope that it is still very transportable and lightweight. I have it mounted on the same TV telepod that I used for my AT1010. It also breaks down easily for airline carry-on. You should easily be able to find a Borg 100ED at the low end of your desired price range here on Astromart.

UO High Definition orthoscopics

Posted By Greg Elspas

I have tried the new HD 9mm and in comparison to the older style ortho cannot distinguish any difference. I know this is not a direct comparison but when compared with a Tak LE-7.5mm, I found the Tak more comfortable to use and perhaps a slight bit sharper as well. The orthos are still a great deal and I think at this point if I were to buy any more I'd save the extra $20 and buy the "classic" style.
