Who's going to the Summer Star Party

Thanks for bringing the Star Party to my attention. We are planning to be in Ravena NY that weekend visiting my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter, and will likely walk on one evening either Saturday or Sunday. Friday is out since my son has a bicycle race Saturday morning. It would be good to hear from others who are planning to attend. Some real faces would be nice, although my recognition in the dark is quite poor.

Tour de France....

Well, when money, fame, and power are involved the gloves come off, be it sports or life. Those who survive honorably are both admired and mocked depending on the audience. History provides us with too many examples to be ignored.

I will still try to enjoy the Tour with my sons knowing that there are always those who sidestep what is honorable and right. We can always hope.

Your favourite low power view

Not a deep sky object, but a unique view for me. When Saturn and Venus were both visible in my 12" dob using a 17mm Hyperion. Then, not mentioned but one of my favorites, is M104, Jaws and Stargate.

I guess my favorite was the string of M84, M86, and NGCs 4402, 4387, 4388, 4435, and 4438. The string goes on but eludes my 24 TV widefield, and others disappear with longer focal lengths.

We stepped out in Ravena NY Saturday night around 11:30 but did not see any Perseids. What we did see in about 20-30 minutes were 6 Kappa Cygnids which was way above the projected norm. I was bewildered after noticing that all these meteors were radiating from essentially directly overhead and all were short and faint. The good news was that the sky was about mag 5 and the milky way was relatively faint but visible. Another shower to add to my stable of fiewings.

The star test is not just for defining the quality of the mirror. It can be used to evaluate sky conditions, particularly seeing. My practice is to do a star test several times a night. Commonly I will check the star test to determine if seeing has changed when something seems to be of poorer viewing than just ago. It usually clarifies what my expectations are for that viewing session. It certainly should be checked when comparing or evaluating EPs.

NGC7027

OK, I found it, but had to use some rather detailed charts with fainter stars than Mag 7. Its small size makes it a little more difficult. When found, at 136X, its elongated nature was noticed and seemed to be fainter on one side than the other. This is in contrast to the photo on the NGC/IC site.
