Re: Hillary and Republicans

1. No matter what she does, she will not ever meet your specifications, Jim. I'd like to see the look on your face when she appoints Bill Secretary of State! 8)

2. No matter what she does, she will do better than Bush at uniting the country behind her. Bush has brought the country togehter against him. Even a lot of republicans have no use for him! wink

Re: Convienient Lies by Gore

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

Actually, Jim, if you read the article, the judge agreed "that Mr Gore's film was 'broadly accurate' on the subject of climate change, he found that errors had arisen in 'the context of alarmism and exaggeration'."

In the face of this administration's inaction, a WAKE UP CALL was needed.

As far as the specific "errors" are concerned here are my comments.

1. Melting of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica is happening very much faster than scientists predicted. North polar ice cap is fading fast and will be gone in a few decades.

2. I recall seeing a story about an island which was evacuated because salt had contaminated it's fresh water. I believe that this was because of changing weather patterns as verses sea level rise.

3. The judge said it was "very unlikely" that the gulf stream would shut down. What are the consequences if it does? Shouldn't we take action now?

4. CO2 levels are at record highs and are rising at record rates. CO2 is a greenhouse gas and will effect global temperatures, the only question is how much and how fast.

5. It has been established that global warming has a huge human induced component. If the disappearing snows on Kilimanjaro are not caused by that, than what?

6. As to the drying of Like Chad see 5 above.

7. Warm waters increase hurricane strength and the waters of the Gulf were warmer than normal for Katrina.

8. The north polar ice cap will be gone shortly. This will be a disaster for the Polar Bear even if they don't drown.

9. While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of coral bleaching, coral is very sensitive to temperature and there is strong evidence that a lot of the bleaching is temperature induced.

The gist of Gore's message is: ACT NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!

Believe it or not a great deal of Hong Kong's air pollution is caused by the US. Do you know the reason?

Convenient Nobel Peace Prize for Al Gore

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

Gore, U.N. body win Nobel Peace Prize

"I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize," Gore said. "We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity." - Al Gore

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said global warming, "may induce large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for the earth's resources. Such changes will place particularly heavy burdens on the world's most vulnerable countries. There may be increased danger of violent conflicts and wars, within and between states."

Gore said he would donate his share of the $1.5 million that accompanies the prize to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan nonprofit organization devoted to conveying the urgency of solving the climate crisis.

"His strong commitment, reflected in political activity, lectures, films and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change," the Nobel citation said. "He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted."

Once again, the US needs to be a leader in the war on pollution and global warming. It's a long term money maker.

Income redistribution is alive and well

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

Is your life better in the Bush economic boom?

"The richest one percent of Americans earned a postwar record of 21.2 percent of all income in 2005, up from 19 percent a year earlier"

"The data showed that the fortunes of the bottom 50 percent of Americans are worsening, with that group earning 12.8 percent of all income in 2005, down from 13.4 percent the year before, the paper said."

"It said that while the IRS data goes back only to 1986, academic research suggests that the last time wealthy Americans had such a high percentage of the national income pie was in the 1920s."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/irs_income_dc;_ylt=AjCqnzbomxtFJPvSk94R9Athr7sF

The top 1 percent got a 12% raise in 2006 while the bottom 50% got a 4% cut. Bush attributes the "income inequality to 'skills gaps'..." Yea, right. The poor don't have the skill to buy a politician! 8O

You can't please all of the people all of the time. I doubt that the transgender block is very big anyway. By the way, the republicans proposed cutting farm subsidies then caved in to give Bush another term.

>>> JB - "And your Party continues to say what a great guy you are for years to come."

If I recall correctly Bush went out of his way to honor nixon and IMO what nixon did is MUCH WORSE than staining a dress and ruining a good cigar. :S

9/11 Root Cause

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

The Israeli right wing which is in control at the moment wants all of the Jerusalem and the West Bank for Israel. They have been forcing Palestinians out of Jerusalem and the West Bank for decades despite US and UN efforts to stop this expansion. We still give Israel BILLIONS in aid and give them special treatment like access to all of our military research despite the fact that they sell weapons technology to our rival, China. When I was growing up, if you voted in another country's election you automatically lost your US citizenship. Now Israeli's can have dual citizenship and hold high government offices without a problem.

This one sided treatment of Israel is the biggest reason that Arab and Islamic countries are against the US. Many would have us believe that the animosity that many Muslims have toward the US is because the US is a Christian country. I do not believe that is the case. I believe that the problem is our actions, not our religion. Sure there are radical Islamists that will hate us no matter what, but there are fundamentalist nuts in any religion. It does not help when you invade a Moslem country while you have a White House Press Secretary (Ari Fleischer) who is an Israeli citizen trying to explain why we attacked.

Before there will be peace in the Middle East, we must find a fair solution for the Palestinians. Israeli settlements are a big problem. They are dotted THROUGHOUT the West Bank, not just on borders with Israel. The roads to the settlements are for Israeli use only and in order to cross those roads, Palestinians must submit to time consuming delays and humiliating searches. Israel says that they had offered the Palestinians 90+ percent of the land, but how would you feel if al Qaeda had settlements throughout the US and you had to go through checkpoints to move from place to place?

Iranian nuclear threat

Posted By Tom Rodstrom

I wonder if the Iranian nuclear threat is blown out of proportion. As far as I know, it is easy to trace nuclear materials to their country of origin. If that is the case, Iran would never use nuclear WMD's or give them to terrorists because they know that they would be blown to kingdom come if the weapons were used. The Iranian leaders may be radical, but they are not crazy.

The Daily Mail? Glad to see that you read intellectually challenging international publications. For US news you might try the National Enquirer.
