If not, Then I am sure that we could come up with some reasons, maybe compelling innocuous reasons, why this disparity may exist. Reasons other than subtle historical bias against blacks and women. Personally, I think that subtle historical bias against blacks and women is a real and important part of the answer to the question of, "why are blacks and women are underrepresented in the geosciences?" Maybe not the only reason, but an important one.
Along comes a black woman working in this field. Her perspective is valuable even if her examples are not overly compelling (as James pointed out pretty well). Rather than try to appreciate her perspective and broader meaning, and rather than considering her actual point, Rich and the Beacon (and to a lesser extent you) go straight to mocking her, as if subtle bias in the geosciences is not and never was a thing. As if the possibility of racial or gender bias in this field is so far beyond rational discussion as to be properly subject to ridicule.
Agree with her or not, she has experiences that are valid to this discussion. Jim
You are correct but I will speak only for myself, I dont dispute blacks are under represented in Geo Sciences. As Rich pointed out were it following the population it would be around 1 in 10 and I am sure it is quite a bit less than that. 1 in 50? Less? Who knows....but a lot less.
That said, the paper she wrote tries to assign the blame for that to racism using systemic and critical race theory which is a pile of bull shit..... I dont doubt there may be some small portion of racism there but trying to claim it is the root cause is ridiculous. Simply put the primary cause is likely as simple as the field does not hold enough interest when the bulk of the population we are talking about grew up in inner city environments.
No desire here to appreciate the perspective of someone who obviously buys into "Racism is the cause" of all our problems. I have not mocked her......I just think she is playing the race baiting game that is so popular with the left. I have seen racism, I grew up with it in my face everyday. Anyone who buys into racism being as prevalent as it was 30 to 50 years ago is an idiot, even 20 years ago...... There is less racism present today by FAR than any time in our country's history yet the left wants to make everything about racism. It simply isnt. Of course the media plays its part as well in pushing it because it sells. Racism is dying.....let it die, but of course it sells so politicians feed it as well as the media......
