Who's really greedy.

Posted By Joe Lentz

Andrew, your theory is overly simple. I've been wealthy and I've been poor. Envy had little to do with the former, and greed little to do with the latter. Keep workin on it. wink

Thought for the Day, 09/02/04

>>>>Compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind.<<<<

-Albert Schweitzer, philosopher, physician, musician,
Nobel laureate (1875-1965)

Great quote Mike. As a species we are so stunted when it comes to appreciating
that philosophy. We are so busy destroying biodiversity, without regard for the consequences...
Our collective purpose seems to focus only on short term gain. Yet we persist in viewing
ourselves as the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Depends on what one means
by intelligence. We are very UNintelligence when it comes to stewardship... not to mention
concern for the survival of our descendants.

More Russert vs. Bush

Posted By Joe Lentz

James, yes, I watched the entire interview earlier tonight. I had taped it Sunday, and finally got around to watching it a few hours ago. I just threw the howler article out there in case anyone wanted to see it.

The interview I saw had a Tim Russert who asked fair and difficult questions. I didn't feel that Bush answered them particularly well, but then I'm not exactly a fan. I suppose he did what he had to, I certainly didn't expect to see him choke or change his mind about anything. It was all predictable enough.

I think my goal will be to try and keep my sense of humor about the coming election. It's either that or have fits. wink

Speeding fines being related to income?

Posted By Joe Lentz

Here's the question about fines: Would a thousand bucks represent the same hit to a millionaire that it would to some guy making 30K a year? Of course not. To the extent that a fine is meant to be negative reinforcement, it will only work if it hurts the offender. Making the amount proportional keeps the fine from being a slap on the wrist to one person, and actual punishment to another. That is obviously the logic being applied.

Bush's military records released

Posted By Joe Lentz

And from the MSN article re: press conference with Scott McClellan:

"At one point, he sidestepped four consecutive questions about why medical records that Bush would have had to have maintained during his service could not be produced, leading a frustrated network television reporter to demand to know why McClellan would not directly answer his question."

And with regard to the released pay records:

"Retired Army Col. Dan Smith, a 26-year military veteran, questioned the usefulness of the latest information."

“Pay records don’t mean anything except that you’re in or you’re out,” Smith said. “It doesn’t necessarily reflect what duty you’ve actually performed because pay records simply record your unit of assignment and then all of your pay and benefits per pay period. In terms of actually reporting for your duty, that would not be reflected on the pay notification, or pay stub.”

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if this resolves anything...

Thought for the Day #2, 11.02.04...

"In a democracy dissent is an act of faith. Like medicine, the test of its value is not in its taste, but in its effects."

-J. William Fulbright, US Senator (1905-1995)

Good quote Mike. I would agree with the senator, and add this: Dissent is also an act of conscience, something every founding father of this country knew well. Dissent seems to be something many in the current administration would prefer it's citizens to abandon. The heart and soul of this country, for better or worse, lies in it's citizenry, not in Washington.

Longer Term.

Posted By Joe Lentz

Daryl, Clinton was ELECTED twice, and he didn't need help from the Supreme Ct. either.
Forget the 8 year term; let the voters decide whether Bush stays or goes. We need
a little check and balance in the system, and given the makeup of the legislature
and the Supreme Ct., the only check on THIS administration will be the voters.
Enough damage can be done in 4 years anyway, that much is obvious.

Politics forum - a good thing

Posted By Joe Lentz

>>>>I think we all can do a better job of presenting ideas as opposed to name calling. If we took a little more time to listen, I'd bet that we find a lot more common ground than we expect.<<<<

Sounds like a worthy goal Tom. And for those who have a difficult time controlling their emotions, and for those who dislike having a politics forum, the solution is simple. Don't go to it! It's a personal choice.

Mike, of course the modern version of your quote is:

"Don't fix it if it ain't broke." ;-)
