Australia's Success from Banning Assault Weapons

Posted By Alan French

Note that Australia's response to a mass shooting was a much stricter ban on assault weapons than we had here from 1994 to 2004. It also worked.

Pre-1970 Objective with Large Air Space

Posted By Alan French

Hi Folks,

We're trying to figure out the source of a 4" f/15 objective in a pre-1970 telescope. The exact vintage is unknown, but it was bought used around 1969.

The objective has a very large air space, about one inch. The spacer is a thin walled brass cylinder. The cell looks professional, with a nice push pull set up.

I should have some photos soon, but figured I'd start by asking if anyone was familiar with sny objective with such a large air space.

Thanks, and clear skies, Alan

Updated ISON/Encke Movie from STEREO-A

Posted By Alan French

A new version of the movie made from images taken by STEREO-A (orbiting well ahead of Earth) show Comets ISON and Encke for a longer period as they approach the Sun. The interaction between their tails and the solar wind is really interesting.

We should have some fine views from STEREO-A and STEREO-B and other NASA missions as ISON passes close to the Sun!

A Slender Venus in the Daytime Sky

Posted By Alan French

Sitting in the shaded deck to the east of my house, it is easy to keep the Sun completely out of view, and sweep up Venus with binoculars. I first looked at the thin crescent Venus on January 4. Today I finally remembered to look at 1:20, and easily found it in my 12x36 IS binoculars, which nicely showed the crescent. The slender crescent, with the planet only 0.6% illuminated,
was a lovely sight in my 65mm spotting scope at 60x.

Tomorrow Venus will be due south from here at 12:13 pm, and the planet will be 0.4% illuminated. It will be just over five degrees north of and just over two degrees east of the Sun. The slope of the eastern edge of my roof nicely allows me to see the sky northeast of the Sun with the Sun hidden below the roof.

Clear skies, Alan
