It turns out there was NO school resource officer on the scene inside the school, so the killer wasn't confronted.

No! They need to have the police training for school shootings. What ever training the man in charge there had, he made the wrong decision. It happens.

That stat surprises me, but at 70 I have pondered how miserable would a person have to be?

Some city folk actually think guns are evil! I have met some that feel that way.

First, we have to eliminate the ease of access to powerful assault-style weapons. No civilian needs a weapon of war for self-defense. Simultaneously, we need to pour significant resources into detecting and stopping shootings before they happen. This means we need red-flag laws and teeth and bite to make them effective. Until these two things happen, the next school shooting is entirely inevitable.
They might have been waiting for a team with shields that could stop a .223, .556, or AK round. These are the rounds most encountered in the AR-15 type rifles.
But any of the common hunting rifles and most shotguns are much more powerful. And there could be thousands of those in that area. Some of those are bolt action and many are semi. They might have only 5 or 6 rounds but more capacity is common, also. But in any case they could tear right through the shields and give a team more to worry about than the Daniel Defense AR he had.

The AR is considered too weak to hunt deer in some states. But some gun rights people suspect this round will be restricted first. Later it can be said we restricted the weakest one, so why not these much more powerful ones?
It is obvious anti-gunners will not stop with any legislation they achieve. It is why many oppose any legislation. The best that can be done they think is maybe to slow all legislation down as much as possible.

It's the guns.

It's always been the guns.

At the Pulse nightclub shooting, there was an officer on the scene. Other officers arrived within two minutes of the shooter opening fire. The shooter still managed to kill 49 people and wounded another 50. No chance it would have been that deadly if he hadn't had an AR-15-style weapon, the Sig Sauer MCX.
Although, there is evidence the shooter was NOT mentally well.

What do you have against facts? Almost any rifle can go through a wall or door except the .22 rim fires we had when we were kids.
And it is fact that the .223 is on the weaker end of rifle cartridges.
It is lethal? All rifles are lethal! Christ!
And it is coming from Mel AGAIN BECAUSE YOU ARE SO STUPID YOU CAN'T GRASP IT!

I also recall arguing with a con in the forum who claimed the round couldn't penetrate walls in a building.
"The following is a partial list of when an AR-15-style weapon was used in a mass shooting":
Feb. 14, 2018: Shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida leaves 17 people dead.
Oct. 1, 2017: The Las Vegas slaughter of 58 people.
Nov. 5, 2017: The Sutherland Springs, Texas, church shooting that claimed 26 lives.
June 12, 2016: The Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Fla., that left 49 dead.
Dec. 2, 2015: The San Bernardino, Calif., shooting that killed 14 people.
Dec. 14, 2012: The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut that took 27 lives.
"In 1994, President Bill Clinton signed an assault-weapons ban, which banned the AR-15 and other similar semiautomatic rifles."
"After its ban, mass shootings were down in the decade that followed, in comparison to the decade before (1984-94) and the one after (2004-14), NPR reported in 2018."

Now, do you finally get it, MEL?!
You can't type anything that would help me "get" something on this subject.

Some states say the .223 is too small because they are concerned about a clean kill. Hell, a .223 could most likely kill any animal, eventually. But if it takes off after being shot the odds are too good a hunter will not get it.

Nobody is denying a .223 kills people. Why keep trying to argue that?  You typed a lot of words for nothing. And except for a few others, it still is the weakest rifle round.

James remarked heavily armed cops were too scared to engage. I'm suggesting they could be waiting for shields that could block the AR. I'll add the thousands of hunting rifles and shotguns probably in the area would be able to rip right through those shields.

An AR is not recommended for home defense because a RIFLE has too much range and penetration. It could end up in your neighbor's house.
