I would like to survey the group as I am considering getting one to compliment my 120mm f/1000mm. Your comments are appreciated.

Expectations for Resolution

Posted By Michael Tencza

Often when rating telescopes the reviewers will report how well certain double stars are split. Since this is not new I was wondering if someone had a handle on exactly what is to be expected from different sized apertures. I have a 120mm refractor that can split the double-double in Lyra very well. This is likely the norm for a refractor of this size but it would be nice to know what to expect from different telescopes as this would make buying decisions easier.

Before I buy, I'd like to know what the consensus is for filters useful for viewing Mars. I am using a Megrez II 80mm FD (f/6.9).

How to Determine Refractor FOV

Posted By Michael Tencza

I know how to calculate the FOV for an eyepiece but every so often I see a written specification for a telescope for a maximum FOV. How is this determined? By the eyepiece calculation I get 4.95 degrees with my Paragon 40mm in my 80mm f/550mm refractor. Am I actually seeing this wide a FOV or something less?

2.8x Klee Vignettes TV Plossls?

Posted By Michael Tencza

No big deal but I never expected to get vignetting with a plossl in a barlow, yet that's what I got. Are these barlow's only made for orthoscopics or am I living wrong?

Maximum Sized Catadioptric on an Orion Astroview

Posted By Michael Tencza

I am interested in purchasing a Catadioptric Telescope for use on an Astroview Mount. Portability is a consideration but I mainly want it to compliment my 80mm apo to get more detailed views of planets and see more and fainter DSOs. Astrophotography is not a consideration and modification of the mount to attach it would be no problem. So, what is the largest and best unit that I can mount on the Astroview for visual use. All advice is welcome.

1.25" 32mm Erfle vs. Plossl

Posted By Michael Tencza

I noticed a 1.25" 32mm Erfle in the eyepiece ads. It is my understanding that a 32mm Plossl shows almost the entire FOV that can be seen with a 1.25" eyepiece due to its physical constraints. So, is there any other advantage with the Erfle?

This is a great size scope for my needs right now but I can't find any reviews. Does anyone have any experience with these?
