My first Mars

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Took a couple still shots with Sony Cybershot DSC-P51. This was the best of them all. Very hard holding camera up to ep and keeping everything centered in zoom mode.
If I could get a few shots like this would it be worth it to try stacking?
Any thoughts or tips appreciated.

24mm Pan + 5x powermate anyone?

Posted By Jason Paoletti

I just purchased a 24mm Pan. I've been clouded over since, except for a 15 minute break Sunday night. The double cluster was beautiful in my 8" f/6. Anyway, I'm looking for something in the 5mm range and was wondering whether anyone has tried the 24mm Pan w/ 5x powermate. This would give me about 250x. It's either that or the 5mm T6.
Any comments appreciated.

Tak 5mm LE

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Anyone have one of these ep's? I posted the question on a yahoo group and only got 2 replies so maybe I'll get more here. I am particularly interested in the 5mm fl. At 9-10mm er shouldn't be a problem as I've used ep's with much less. This ep will be used for planetary views. This will be used in an 8" f/6 dob for about 243x. Considering 5mm radian and t/6 nagler as well, but I hear just as much negative on the later two as I hear positive. ie. blackouts false/lateral color, eye placement critcal.etc.
With the exception of my 24mm pan all my other ep's are TV plossls and one UO ortho. So the fov shouldn't be too bad either. I barlow all my ep's with TV 2x for my planetary viewing at present. So how does this ep stack up to others or my present set-up? Also nudging a dob isn't a problem for me either.I'd like to add that my 4 year old daughter likes to come out and view with me so ease of use is critcal. Thanks for any replies.

Pentax XW's

I haven't seen much as far as reviews go. Any body have any comments? My use would be in an 8" f/6 for planetary powers.
Thanks,
Jason

Need one more ep

Posted By Jason Paoletti

I need some help in choosing my next (hopefully last) ep.
My main scope in a Discovery 8" f/6 Dob w/ 1219 fl.
Currently using a 24mm Pan at 50x as my finder/open cluster/large
bright object ep. Next up is a 7mm T6 nagler at 174x for
planetary/lunar on less than ideal nights and a 5mm T6 for 243x on
good nights.
Now I am looking for an ep that will do well at globs and planetary
nebs. I am thinking of either 9mm(135x) or 11mm(110x) T6's or 10mm(122x) or 12mm(100x)
Radians. I am located just outside Detroit and my skies are probably
around 4.5 on a decent night.
Any thoughts and maybe a few why's.
Thanks,
Jason

Shorty Plus and T6 Nags

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Anyone try a Shorty Plus/Ultima barlow with a T6 Nagler?
Any vignetting or blackouts? How about the magnification factor? Some report 2x-2.4x depending on the ep.
Thanks,
Jason

3 " apo's

Posted By Jason Paoletti

Hi all, very interesting thread on the 4" achro vs. 3" apo.
I'm in the same boat and heavily leaning toward the 3" apo.
Besides I can't afford anything bigger. Even then I'll have to save my pennies for a while.
So can anyone with a 3" apo say from 76mm to 80mm give me any tips? I have an 8" dob, but being newly divorced and a single father now I don't have much more than 1/2 hour or so to observe at any one time. I'm mainly into planets and open clusters. I need something with fat cool down time and something I can grab and go. At what powers can I expect to achieve on planets?
Main contenders at this time is the Tak FS78 (Are they still making this scope?)
Stellarvue 80L and the TV76.
Any and all comments appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

Hey Floyd

Posted By Jason Paoletti

I was just reading up some of the posts here when my 5 year old daughter comes up to me and says, "hey that's Walt Disney!" I said where? and she pointed to your picture. Is there something you're not telling us?
