QuickView Setup

Posted By John Moore

Here's my quick view setup - for day or night observing! TV-76 and MaxScope 40 on a CG-5 mount sitting on a portable pier with casters and vibration suppression pads. Just roll it out of the garage, slap on the scopes, and view.

Celestron Ultima and Antares W70 EP's

Posted By John Moore

I'm looking for opinions of the Antares W70 short f/l EP's (5.8mm and 8.6mm)in comparison to the 7.5mm Celestron Ultima's for use in an f/6.3 refractor and an f/10 SCT.

Opinions - Antares UltraWide's & Antares W70's

Posted By John Moore

Is there anyone out there who has compared the the Antares UltraWide's with the Antares W70's? Is there any difference in the EP construction and design?

Permanent Pier Height for 11" SCT

Posted By John Moore

I'm getting ready to construct a roll-off for my Nexstar 11GPS. Those of you who have your larger SCT's set up on permanent piers - what height above the observatory floor is your mounting plate? Using my standard Celestron tripod (which puts the bottom of the scope mount at about 30") I can sit at about 19-20" with the scope pointed at zenith and at about 31-32" with the scope pointed at the horizon. Based on this, I'm ordering a 30" pier. Can anyone offer opinions on whether this sounds like the right height?

DSI Pro 1st Light

Posted By John Moore

Here's a quickie image that I took this morning with my new DSI Pro. Conditions were terrible, with high winds and some high clouds. Combination of two stacked shots - one exposed for proms & one exposed for surface. About 20 frames each, stacked by the DSI Pro software. Focusing is a little soft, but about the best I could get under the conditions. The dot that resembles a transit is an artifact on the DSI Pro's chip - noticed several that I'll need to blow off. Didn't pay much attention to exposure settings under the conditions and a limited amount of time. Setup is a TV-76 with double-stacked SM40's and a BF10 blocker.

Why so little info about the SKYnyx cameras?

Posted By John Moore

I've searched both CN and AM forums for info on the new Lumenera SKYnyx cameras with very little success. Are these so new that few have them, or are they just overpriced webcams? I'm looking to replace my aging ToUcam for something better for planetary, solar, and lunar photography. These SKYnyx cameras were high on my list after the S&T review a while back. Am I barking up the wrong tree? What else is out there?

Collecting shipping insurance, damaged scope

Posted By John Moore

Guess I'm odd-man-out on collecting. UPS damaged a C5+ I shipped to the West Coast from Ohio, but they paid to have it sent to Celestron to be fixed. No hassle.

Mounting for pier (help needed)

Posted By John Moore

Dan: you really need to isolate the pier from the observatory floor to control vibration. Go to the Astro Pier website (http://www.astropier.com/installation.html) and there is a nice description of how to install a pier - and it's much more involved than a 12" deep x-shape pattern, especially if you have a scope of any size. Good luck!

2" visual back

Posted By John Moore

I'm using one from Astro-Physics for my N11GPS. Looks like they have one that will fit your scope for $40 - ADASCT is the item number, I think. Works just fine with my TV 2" diagonal.

Nexstar 114GT Firmware Version

Posted By John Moore

I talked to Daniel Bisque at Software Bisque and he resolved the problem. Apparently the settings that The Sky software uses for the Nexstar scopes includes some GPS stuff. Since the Nexstar 60, 80, 114, and 130 don't have the GPS encoders the signals being sent and received don't contain all the right info and a com link cannot be established. By changing to the Ultima 2000 setup everything works fine. I've tested both the laptop and the IPAQ with David Carter's cables and everything is working as hoped.

Just as an aside, there has been a lot of chatter here about the noise of the Nexstar 114GT mount. I found this to be true as well, until I took the mount apart and adjusted the alt and az tensions. After that, the mount runs much quieter - definitely not like my N11GPS, but better than when it arrived from the factory. Tonite I'll test how accurate the pointing and tracking are.
