Portable Planetary setup

Posted By Bill Friend

Hi Folks,

I'm solely interested in lunar/planetary observing. I have an excellent C8 Dlx that provides rewarding views under steady skies; which is quite infrequent where I live. The problem is the C8 requires a couple of trips up and down the stairs to setup. I'd like to find something that I can carry out in 1 trip, and is optimized for planetary viewing/tracking. I've come up with the following options and am asking for comments/suggestions/alternatives:

Nexstar 5i
Meade ETX125
C5+ mount(Celestar) with either of the following:
Intes Micro M500
New Intes Micro 6" f/15
Celestron 5" Mak

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Orion StarShoot Deep Space CCD?

Hi Folks,

Looking for opinions based on the published specs; would this be a good "starter" camera? ( I have a C8 Dlx).

Thanks,
Bill

These pics were shot yesterday in Gray, ME on a golf course (and no, he's not my caddy!). Does anyone have an idea of what it is?

Thanks,
Bill

Long f-ratio newts/dobs

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know of a manufacturer who offers quality long f/ratio newtonian OTA's or dobs? I'm looking for something in the 6-8", f/8-10 range?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

SCT or Refractor?

Posted By Bill Friend

Michael,

Its tough to beat a quality, used SCT on a fork mount. Depending on the model and condition, you can get a very useful instrument between 600 and $1200. They're easy to setup, comfortable viewing position and scale nicely as observing interests grow (both recreational and scientific). If you can, try to attend a star party and look thru some. And the most important point here, make sure the optics are collimated (ask the owner!). Collimation is crucial to an SCT, and is very easy to do.

Pronto for moon & Planetary?

Posted By Bill Friend

Hi David,

Here's a link to a recent review (and planetary pics) of a Ranger on CloudyNights. I had one several years ago, and I think these pics fairly represent what you can expect to see.
