FS 78 and CG5

Posted By Mike LeHere

I have a Vixen GP-DX and want to mount an FS78 to it. The FS 78 comes with the clam shell. Can this be easily mounted to a CG5 dovetail giving a stable setup? If not, I have a set of rings that came with the my Stellarvue A1010. Is it possible to use these rings to mount the FS 78? Or, should I invest in a set of Parallax rings and be done with it?

What to sell, What to Keep?

Posted By Mike LeHere

I have a interesting dilemma. I am fortunate to have 3 great APO refractors, an FS78, an FS102 and an FS128. I love them all but don't need them all. I use the FS78 most often since it is on an Alt-Az mount is a quick setup. I guess competition comes down to the FS102 and the FS128. I usually setup the 128 with a GP-DX mount since it is about the same setup time as the 102 and gives superior deep sky performance. However, I love the 102 also. However, I want to acquire and higher precision mount (GM8 or G11 or maybe an EM200)and will need money soon. I know I am in a very lucky person to have such a problem but would appreciate any input.

90mm Short tubr APOs

Posted By Mike LeHere

Does any manufacturer other than Takahashi and AP make a 90mm short tube APO. I'm looking for something in this rande that is portable enough for air travel? I would be looking to purchase a used but well cared for scope. The Stowaway and Traveller are difficult to find. The Sky 90 pops up once in a while on Astromart. Are there any other options. This scope would replece an FS78 that I will soon sell.

Screws for Stellarvue Rings?

Posted By Mike LeHere

I need help. I'm trying to mount my SV105 to a CG5 dovetail and don't have the correct screws for attachment. Can anyone tell me what size and thread screw I need to mount the Stellarvue R4 rings to a dovetail? I have posted this message in the Stellarvue forum also.

Thanks,

Mike

Cleaning a Very Dirty Mirror

Posted By Mike LeHere

I have a 14" Dob and the mirror has been sitting for 3 years in its light box in the garage. I want to clean the mirror which is quite dirty. I have basic mirror cleaning instructions but am asking if there are any special considerations or methods I should use for a dirtier than normal mirror.

Wood Tripod Legs

Posted By Mike LeHere

I purchased the wood tripod legs from Hands on Optics and installed them on an LXD55 mount and they made a significant difference in dampening vibration. They are made of mahogany and stained. Not the prettiest setup but effective. If you buy theirs make sure you get the tray to stiffen the setup. Should be no extra charge.

Best mount for my 9.25?

Posted By Mike LeHere

I have a GP-DX that I am using with a Meade 127Ed and find the combination works well visually. I am not into CCD work. I intend to put a 9.25 SCT on the mount in the near future. I am confident that it will work well but feel that it is at the upper end of the mounts capability. I also have the SS2K system with my GP-DX and absolutely love it. It is extremely accurate and very easy to use.

Width of Pentax 10.5 XL

Posted By Mike LeHere

Tom.
I believe you have a pair of 24mm Pans. My question is: Are the 24 pans the same width as or smaller than the 21mm Pentax. I have the 21mm Pentax eyepieces that I use with my Denk Std. I can just bare get them to merge. If the Pans were narrower they would probaly work better for me and I would sell the Pentax eyepieces.
