Upgraded 125ETX or Small TV refractor?

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Paul,
Just to respond to you regarding the Pronto holding up to 175x. That's a "yes". I've had my Pronto for only a few months now, but have had no breakdown of image at powers higher than that. Weight and size are wonderful for a grab and go arrangement. No knowledge of the ETX125.
Good luck,

Orion XT8 vs Celestron Starhopper 8"

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Gino,
There was a substantial write up in Sky & Telescope over a year ago. Bottom line was that the XT8 was the "best of the bunch".

Pronto Purchase Question

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Mac,
This might prompt a "bragging rights" thread, but I bought a wonderful Pronto kit (clamshell, case, diagonal, 20mm TV Plossl, signed manual) for $625....shipped! I absolutely love the little scope!

Helical Fine Focuser

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Peter,
Gary Wolanski makes - what I hear to be - a very good helical fine focuser accessory. I don't know if Anacortes sells them or not. I'm sure that a search on google would set you up with some dealers.

Solar white-light/H-a comparison sequence

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Paul,
I'll add my thanks too! Wonderful piece of work with the alternating views! But also a terrific image within the H-a range. I don't think you included the equipment that you used to capture this. Could you let us in on that?
Thanks so much-it's just great!

Slides

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Bill,
If you go to astronomy-mall, they have a listing for "AstroCards". He has an assortment of slide sets. Very nice and I think a little less expensive than many other dealers. I've purchased sets from them and am really satisfied (I teach middle school). Give it a try! His email is [email protected]
Good luck,

U.O. Konigs

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Gary,
I have the UO MK70 40mm and like it a lot! However, the images do get soft in the outer 10% of the fov. That's in f/6 and f/7 scopes. In a longer focal length scope it's going to be much better. And a very good value.
I have always enjoyed the 40 MK70 even though I now have my share of TeleVue eps.

Camera adapters?

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

John,
Scopetronix sells their "Digi-T" series of adapters for many models of digital cameras. I have an older Nikon Coolpix 800 and their adapter worked just great with it. They sell for about $60 (it seems like a lot of $$ for such a little part but I guess there's a lot of machining!)
Good luck,
-Curtis

diff between ETX ra and ec

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Allison,
No, the EC model is equipped with drives in both Right Ascension, and also Declination. The RA model only moves in Right Ascension (hence RA). While the EC model can be driven in both modes, it can also go to an object in the sky when given a command. It also does "tours" (source of info. is the in the 497 hand controller).
You cannot convert an RA model to an EC.
Clear Skies,

Binoviewer Question

Posted By deleted4538 deleted4538

Gregg,
You'll be getting a number of opinions on this I suppose, but I have been using a recent model Lomo binoviewer in my TV85 and recently "Wow"ed my brother and his family on planetary and lunar viewing! I've had a great time with it in my Pronto as well. Hope you can catch Jupiter and Saturn before they're totally gone for the year!
