EPs with eyerelief

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

I don't know if this issue has been beat to death in this particular forum, but I've started wearing eyeglasses, and my wife is blind with out 'em.

I'd like to purchase a bino eventually, but does anyone have any EPs to recommend with eyerelief sufficient for eyeglass wearers? Is it much of an issue with two EPs?

Anyone with GTO zoom experience?

I happened across the GTO zoom EP. Anybody using a pair? Good, bad, indifferent?

Teflon 2"-1.24 adapter question

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

In on of the astronomy magazines, there was a new product, a 2"-1.25" adapter with a large "glow in the dark" thumbscrew and teflon coating.

I can't seem to find the issue, and internet searches have been a bust.
Anyone remember the company who makes 'em?

Mintron MTV-12V1-EX on a mac?

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

Is anyone running the Mintron MTV-12V1-EX on a mac? Could you relate your experiences. Astro video sounds great, and this camera seems reasonably priced for what it accomplishes.

Thanks in Advance! Could you relate your experiences. Astro video sounds great, and this camera seems reasonably priced for what it accomplishes.

Re: "Appliance" Operators?

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

Don't mean to disagree, it's probably true the editors want to put the best visuals to attract readers. But I saw a recently published article in Astronomy about a couple with a C-11 and their published photos. (Ok, granted they ordered a Ritchy-Chretien). Or how about Astronomy's article about Saturn, where it's quite a few brands of scope represented. Or an earlier issue with a huge number of amateur photos of Mars. There seems to be, at least at one magazine some representation of less 'elite' optics, at least every now and then. A lot of it is due to the new digital imaging equipment. It's making small scopes perform like larger apeture telescopes.

Writers used to make their own ink, and pens were carved from feathers.
Then they used typewriters....now it's word processors. So, if you're an old timer, then all this new fangled stuff, you'd be 'dissing' I suppose.

It's inevitable progress, it seems. It's great to be self-reliant, but when some computer-controlled operation can make it for less than you can build it, and/or make it cheaper, with better designs, more convenient operations, etc., people are going to gravitate toward the easier way. when adaptive optics gets cheaper and easy for the 'masses' folks will be wondering if it's a 'good thing'

There's room for all kinds of ways of observing. Myself, I'm glad to be alive when tremendous change is going on in the choices we have to observe! I vote: It's a good thing!!!

Saw a Curious sight Dec 12

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

My wife and I were observing the night of the 12th, when our next door neighbor took this picture. Seems like SC was getting in some extras for the 25th, but his silhouette was caught against the moon.

Happy Holidays All!

In-house observatory

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

My wife and I are contemplating adding on to our home, and my wife suggested putting an observatory in the house. I was thinking of a roll-top outbuilding myself, but I wondered how many of you had In-house observatories built, or know of someone who has. I'd like to hear about your experiences and advice!

I'm Quitting Astromony This April!!!

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

I can't stand it here in cloudy old Michigan. It's been overcast here for 8 weeks!! I'm kicking all my optical telescopic gear outa here and going into radio astronomy!

I've enjoyed everyone on Astromart, you all have been great.
I've already picked up several old satellite dishes, and created an interferometer.

Re: OK GUYS 9.25 WINS OVER THE REFRACTOR

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

Mark,

I think you made a good choice with the 9.25. I wish my wife would let me get one! But I can't part with my other scopes, yet!

Personally, either material would be ok, but the carbon fiber has the advantage of thermal stablility. Here's what Celestron says on their website (or used to!)--

"Carbon Fiber Tube — 1/4 the thermal expansion of aluminum which creates a more stable focus. The Carbon Fiber tube is 4 times more resistant to temperature changes than aluminum tubes, thus minimizing your need to re-focus."

Casio Pathfinder Watch

Posted By Gerald Kuchera

I read the review on this watch, it looks like a fairly good deal for the price. But I would like the ability for more than one time zone, and illumination that might stay on for another second or two....does anyone know if Casio is planning on an improved model? Are there other watches like it out there that are reasonably priced?
