Hubble Space Telescope WFPC 1 Cassegrain Cameras

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

For those interested have recently aquired 4 of 8 Hubble Telescope's Widefield Planetary Camera (WFPC) assemblies as part of my Space Artifacts collection and posted images to my website..these assemblies are beleived to have been removed from the Hubble Space Telescope during the STS-61 servicing mission (WFPC 1 was subsequently replaced during that service mission with WFPC 2). Direct link to the page is:

Best Method for obtaining Correct Focus with a DSLR Camera?

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

I know this is a CCD forum however could not locate one dedicated to DSLR imaging so hopefully this is the correct location. I have a CANON 20D inbound (to cheap to pay for a proper CCD rig) and am looking for recomendations on how to achieve optimal focusing. Intend to hook the camera up via a low profile T-Ring adapter to standard 2" eyepiece interface (will be used in conjunction with a Van Slyke Slider II backended off a C-14 for night time imaging or configured with a Solar Spectrum Ha .3 angstrom filter during the daytime)......

Have looked at the STELLAR TECHNOLOGIES website and notice they offer a STILLETO designed to aid with the focusing process...has anybody had experience with this product...if so do you recommend purchasing or is there another, less expensive but equally effective alternative?

Thanks in advance for any comments!!

Re: Best method of international shipping?

BAX Global...they are very competative (particularly on larger shipments) and seem to have a better rep with handling....

Mass Production of High End Optics

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

Why cant computer controlled CNC type machines and/or tuned lasers be used to cut, ablate and figure very high quality optics? Wouldnt the repeatable precision of this type technology be more consistant, cheaper and faster then the some of the techniques used today (perhaps companies like Meade and Celestron are already employing?)

Tree Stump for a Pier

I have a 2 foot thick Oak Tree I was considering cutting down to the requisite height and using as a fixed pier...any thoughts on stability/vibration issues that may render this option non-viable?Z 8)

Trading an AP155 for an AP160..why?

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

I periodically notice individuals who are "trading up" their 155's EDF/EDFS for the new 160...is there that much of an appreciable performance gain (only a 5 mm increase in aperature!) that motivates people to move to the 160?

Collecting NASA Space Artifacts and Memorabilia

Posted By Scott Schneeweis

Am curious how many others on this board who collect NASA Space items but remain "in the closet". In my case, I focus on finding, documenting spacecraft components from the US Space Program (launch vehicle propulsion (rocket engines) , spacecraft systems used by the crew during flight or to support habitabilty/survival in space, Robotic spacecraft systems, experiments ect). However there other aspects to collecting "SPACE" to include autographs on (you name the item), flown momento's like flags, pins, coins; philatelic items ect, lucite encapsulated parts/pieces, books, models ect. If you do collect, how do you store/display these items; and how do you use them to support advocacy for US Space initiatives like Project Constellation? And as we close the 50th anniversary of the Proj Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, what, if any role do you see your collection playing to commemorate these truly historic milestones in human history?
