I've been getting up fairly routinely at 4 a.m., then 2:30 and now 1:30 for 60-90 minutes to view Mars, if it's cloudy I just go back to bed.

My old camera-shop-purchased 50mm altazimuth refractor with Ramsden or such eyepieces in around 1969. I remember seeing Jupiter, a white ball with no detail; Saturn where you couldn't distinguish the rings as they crossed the planet's disk; a pink Moon and Alberio as a football-shape with one end blue and the other end yellow. No one else had a telescope where I lived (lots of rifle scopes) so I had nothing to compare this to. Thirty two years later I bought my second scope, an 8" Discovery Dob...what a difference!

Astonished & Disappointed - Please Comment

I looked at M15 this morning (first time I've seen it), Mars and Uranus. I could make out some of the stars of M15 at 374x, Uranus was a tiny disc and Mars was bright but hard to make out detail with the turbulent atmosphere. I enjoy looking at the stars as I search for objects, even when I don't find something in particular I have a great time looking.

Maybe along the lake west of town or around Au Train, anywhere west along the Lake should be good until Shot Point where you might begin to get sky glow from Marquette to the west. I don't know if there's any open areas along the road to Chatham. (I think you'll find Capella never sets over the Lake, I noticed this camping in the Porcupine Mountains this summer).

I have a 5.1mm ED-2, the view is a bit darker than my 4mm Radian or 7mm Siebert, the ED-2 also has more false coloring off-axis than either of these. I still like it, though I find I don't use it as much as the Radian or Siebert. I wear glasses but take then off for viewing...getting some of the long eye relief eyepieces for the day when I need glasses with the scope.

I ran out of the house about 3:30 pm EDT (just after awakening) and looked at the Sun through Baader film with no magnification and both large sunspots were visible. It's been cloudy in SW Michigan, so I view what I can when I can lately. Can't watch the aurora because of the clouds (I need a cloud filter) even though I'm up all night.

Filters would probably help as the contrast on Mars to the naked eye is not that great. I was out about 1 a.m. Saturday in the wind and the dark areas I saw could only be identified by me by going to the ALPO Mars web pages. I was out this morning about 5:15 EDT and could just barely distinguish Solis Lacus. Both nights my seeing was best at 171x with my 127mm Starmax (and a light blue filter).
