Ladies of the Night

I just spent more than three hours in the thrall of two of my ladies of the night, temptresses both of them! We toured the night with abandon, visiting Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter, then back again, but it wasn't enough. We spotted the globular cluster M68 south of Corvus in Hydra, yet they cried for more. We went to the galaxies of Virgo, Leo, Hydra, Ursa Major and elsewhere until, at last, they were drunk with the views. Spent, I put them aside, but I know they will soon call for me again, compelling me to dance them through the heavens, their willing slave! I am undone!

Eyeglasses

I have a couple of apos and some very nice eyepieces, but the weak link in my optical train is my spectacles. In everyday use it is natural for them to become scratched, marred, or otherwise flawed. I have been toying with the idea of buying a special pair of glasses which I will keep aside until I go out observing. This pair will receive special care and handling, and will be kept as clean and unmarked as my scopes. Does anyone else go to these lengths, or is this a common practice for those of us who are hopelessly myopic?

Masuyama-Type EP Background

I, and others, have been searching for background on this eyepiece type. Its origins, who manufactures them, its characteristics, the differences among brands...anything! There are several examples of this popular eyepiece: for example, Tak LE, Ultima, Ultrascopic, Antares Elite, Eudioscopic, and others, including Masuyama, of course. For all its popularity, however, this design doesn't even have a name! In fact, information is so scarce, it doesn't even have parentage...that is, there is no firm claim to the company or individual which designed it. Do any of you experts out there have any info to share? 'Fess up!

Bob's right about the ghosting; it's not terrible, but it's there, nonetheless. the Tak also has decent eye relief, for an eyepiece with such a short focal length, which makes it a comfortable EP to use. The AP and TMB eyepieces in that focal length likely have shorter eye relief. There are always tradeoffs; you just need to decide which features in an eyepiece are the most important to you!

Early Sears Refractor

This is an early version of the Japanese-made Sears Model 6333 EQ refractor. This is a 60mm f/15 refractor on a fairly primitive, although servicable EQ mount. It came with a 6x30 finder, barlow, three eyepieces, winged eyeguards, moon filter, illuminated accessory tray, and a solid hardwood cabinet. My guess is that it is a 60s vintage scope, and it is in pretty good shape for an old scope.

Missed Opportunities

I was thinking about the recent offer by Hardin Optical for their discontinued 6" Dob at only $99.00 plus shipping. I was kicking myself for not buying one, even though I didn't really need it, because at that price, how could you go wrong? I then thought about the old Sovietski 6" EQ Newtonian reflector that was shipped in two wooden crates for only $600 or $700; it had a reasonably well-figured parabolic mirror, sturdy mount, cabinet-quality crates, and several accessories for drop dead cheap. I kinda wish I popped for that, too, when I had the chance; it was a heckuva deal for a pretty darn good setup. What other deals are we kicking ourselves for not grabbing when the opportunities knocked on our doors?
