Midnight Feeder Bandit

Posted By Edward Tuinstra

I have seen fleeting flashing at the feeder when turning on the outdoor lights at times. I got a good look tonight - a flying squirrel. The light was so low I got some motion blur but I'm happy to have the pic.

Red Headed Woopecker

Posted By Edward Tuinstra

These birds seem to move just before you can snap a shot. This bird was elusive until she(?) had little ones to feed. I have finally got something besides blur. Thanks for looking.

Piliated Woodpecker

Posted By Edward Tuinstra

I got some nice shots of a male piliated today. They're quite shy. About 5 degrees, a fine snow falling.

Please post a pic of your accessory case

I bought one of the wonderful Lowe's cases after reading an earlier thread here. I think I'm gonna buy one or two more. Here's my layout (a work in progress). The hole on the bottom right is where my yet unpurchased 19mm Pan goes :^)

MK67 Focus Question

Posted By Edward Tuinstra

One more story. My MK67 was new in 2000, and I use a Lumicon 2" diagonal. My UO MK70 40mm, Widescan III 30mm, 24.5mm SWA, 19mm Panoptic, 13.8 SWA, 12.5mm & 9mm UO orthos, 11mm TV plossl, 9mm nagler T1, 7mm Nagler T1 all come to focus. There is not enough inward travel for my 6 & 7mm UO Orthos to reach focus.

Mak History

Posted By Edward Tuinstra

Hi Thomas,
What a fascinating find! Thanks for posting the photo. You might get some help from the Antique Telescope Society, http://www1.tecs.com/oldscope/ . You can post an inquiry on their Yahoo group here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oldscope/ .
I'd be very careful to spend some time researching before you changed a thing, as changes can reduce monetary and historical value.

There's a thread on sci.astro.amateur, do a google search for: "Has anyone tried this 30mm 2' 80 deg AFOV eyepiece?"

Televue 85 vs Intes MK66

Posted By Edward Tuinstra

I have an Intes MK67 and a Takahashi FC-76 (among others). The main choice you're making here is whether or not you'll give up some contrast for higher resolving power. I think a good example is observing low contrast detail on Jupiter. When switching from the refractor to the mak, you'll initially think to yourself that there is litttle additional to be seen in comparison and the primary belts will stand out less. After spending a little time, you'll slowly realize that there is some subtle detail visible in the Mak that had escaped you when using the refractor. I think you need both. shocked)

Adapter help

Posted By Edward Tuinstra

I'd email stellarvue to get the thread spec for your scope, measure the prism threads (36.4mm?) and then research a Borg adapter. Borg has a BUNCH of threaded parts for fitting things together.
