We cannot drill our way out of this problem. The US cannot produce enough oil to make us energy independent. If OPEC were to increase its production, gas prices would drop soon. Only OPEC has a spigot large enough to control gas prices.
Here are US oil production numbers along with gas prices at the time. As you can see, our oil production does not correlate with gas prices. There is much more going on that affects gas prices besides domestic production.
Pre-COVID:
We peaked at 12,910 thousand barrels per day in December 2019. Gas was $2.34 per gallon.
Height of COVID:
We bottomed out at 9,711 thousand barrels per day in May of 2020. Gas was $1.96 per gallon. Note that gas was cheaper, despite a 1/3 drop in production!
Today:
In the last four months available (Nov. Dec. 2020, and Jan. Feb. 2021), the average is 11,512 thousand barrels per day. Over those same four months, the gas price average was $3.48 per gallon. Production is down from its peak by only 10.8%, but gas prices are up by almost 50% from the peak oil production in Dec. 2019.
"We cannot drill our way..."
We need to vote our way. More Dems means higher prices.
Anybody surprised the Interior Sec. would not say gas prices are too high. She did not want to lie.
SHE DOES NOT THINK THEY ARE TOO HIGH!
People could save a lot of money if they voted for politicians that AGREED GAS PRICES ARE TOO HIGH.
TOO DIFFICULT?
