Are you so obtuse that you don't understand that even in your industry, its called getting promoted through job experience, or do you think that everyone starts out as a CEO when they finish college?
Just like in your job, you weren't always making 6 figures were you?
Therefore the "construction laborer" isn't going to be a construction laborer his entire career.
I mean to say, I realize that might be difficult for one like yourself to wrap your mind around, but most people have the brain power to understand that when a person enters the field of employment that they change their job title at least 7 times during the average career.
He or she will do something different perhaps, learn a trade like maybe framing, trim carpentry, cabinetmaking, roofing, concrete formsetter, concrete flatwork finisher, tilesetter, masonry, painter, carpet installer, and on and on.
There are many smart guys who are auto mechanics, electricians, plumbers,
So rather than arrogantly looking down your pencil nose at others who may not have the education that you imply you have and that everyone NEEDS in this day, otherwise they can't make it in this world, realize that they could probably run circles around you when it comes to troubleshooting that electrical circuit which makes your lights come on in your kitchen when you push that rocker switch on the wall.
And for your information, I happen to be a master carpenter myself and I've owned my cabinetshop for nearly 35 years now.
Now I'm taking into consideration the possibility that you might just be one of these types who looks down on others because they don't wear a suit or tie to work, so maybe you didn't mean to be so condescending towards construction laborers, as I took your smarmy little response to be.
And your smug statement above where you claim "most carpenters" don't make jack shit" just belies your ignorance and stupidity about the field of carpentry.
One of my best friends, a man named Len taught me a GREAT deal about the field of carpentry. In fact he worked with me today, when I went to a gal's place of business, built and installed some shelving units for her hair salon. He's 85 years old, owned his business for 54 years building custom homes, and he lives in a house that is 7800 square feet, the one he built with his bare hands in 1990, and is worth well over $1.2 Million dollars.
My guess is that it would put your house to shame pal. So next time before you make your condescending conclusions about others not making "jack shit", realize that you don't have the brains to build your own one.
Then again, I guess if one is a pompous ass, and has never gotten his hands dirty in his life, because he went to college and sat behind a computer his entire life, one may just be too ignorant or perhaps arrogant to understand what is involved in the career of a blue collar worker.
Maybe that explains your uninformed response, or perhaps you didn't spend one second reading the article I linked because it laid out something like 20 jobs that pay fairly well without the need for a college education. Whichever it is, I was happy to educate you on the facts of life in a blue collar worker's life.
So next time your water heater goes out, you arrogant little twit, see if punching some lines of code into your little computer there fixes your shower temperature.
Apparently a College Education does NOT instill common sense and logic into one's brain. LOL!
Rich,
Your ridiculous assertions aside there is nothing wrong with the trades you mentioned and there are certainly smart people doing them. But those trades aren't going to drive American economic dominance and worker
competitiveness. We need more highly educated people to compete globally, not plumbers.
