An excellent view of it. It has that on-rushing tidal wave of light effect that I sometimes see in M 82 under superb conditions with my 16" dob.
A very nice photo, well done!

My old & trusty Philips 675K webcam finally died, after 8+ years of good labor... (I just got a Philips SPC900, which I bought used, here on AMart)

Taken this morning (07/23/09, around 2:30-3:00am).
You'll see the famous GRS (Great Red Spot), multiple bands & storms, plus a Satellite shadow transit (Callisto's).

Equipment used was: 10" Meade LX-200GPS, 2x barlow (f/20) & a Philips SPC900 webcam. (1200 frames, stacked with Registax 5, and processed with Photoshop CS2)

Seeing conditions were very steady. (South Florida weather)
Image has been reduced to 75% of the original.

Nice image. I found it interesting it matches my description of Mars as noted in the "after dark" forum under the title of, "Mt Pinos Wed Sept 16."

I couldn't quite make out the polar cap but I could see that Mars was slightly gibbous with similar surface detail evident as in your image. At the time I viewed it, the tiny image of Mars was low in the horizon, approximately 30 degrees or so but I was pleased to see as much detail that I did at the time with my 16" F4.5 dob.

Mars at Opposition?

What I don't get is why there haven't been any pictures of Mars on the 29th, the actual date of opposition, that I have been able to find thus far. I looked at it visually and I'm telling you there was more surface detail visible on the 29th than what I'm seeing posted on the days before or after it. How about it? Any pictures of Mars on the 29TH? My basic gut level response to not seeing any posted for the 29th is "huh"!

I was observed Mars visually on the 29th and there was a lot of surface detail that I don't see on the days preceding or following the opposition on the 29th
