Sorry to add a little astronomy to the discussion, but I arrived back in WA last week and then drove to my observing site where I have been staying since.

The first night I was using my 18" dob to observe many of the southern highlights... 30 doradus, eta Carina, ngc 2808, 3532, 4945, centaurus A, and many others. 

One thing I noticed, my eyes might not be as good as they used to be. Could not for certain see Centaurus A naked eye like I  used to. Old age I guess. 🙁

Was waiting for a local workshop to make me a pier for my C14. That was finished yesterday and the telescope is now mounted. So what do you think has happened? One guess... 

After 5 superbly clear and dark skies, the clouds have rolled in! 😫  B...y Murphy!

Hi James, 

Not too remote.  It is on the eastern edge of the town of Koorda,  about 230km northeast of Perth in the middle of the west austlian wheat belt.

The town is quite small,  only about 200 population, so there are few lights and they are only to the west. North, south and east there are none at all. There is a small glow to the southwest from Perth, but that is less than 10 degrees and doesn't interfere at all. 

I did a limiting magnitude estimation last night and it wad 7.1, so nice and dark.

The picture below is a 30 second shot looking southwest showing the glow from Perth.

Hi Russ,

Actually I feel the opposite is more likely.  The radical right of the evangelical branch of Christianity is more interested in turning the US into a so-called Christian theocracy. Just look at how many so-called blue laws still exist and are enforced to some extent just because some sects within Christianity think Sunday should be a holy day despite having no biblical support.

Hi Jim,

Great post. Congrats on your retirement.  Hope it is a long one and that you get in plenty of eyepiece time. 

I could have retired in May but decided to wait until after the eclipse in April. 

If you would like a 'warm' Christmas,  then come for a visit "down under ". Can show you some great sights as well as the southern skies.  Christmas is typically around 90-100 in WA.  Great beach weather!

My concern regarding this lawsuit against Trump is that if somehow it fails for whatever reason, Trump will scream vindication and it will cement his control over the republican party and their nomination. 

Biden against Trump again  is not much of a choice for your president.

No particular beef with Biden apart from his age. He has done an ok job so far, but nothing great.

Is it really the case that your country can only find people pushing 80 to be president? Where are all the younger,  more dynamic leaders?
