TV Radian vs TV Plossl

Posted By Michael Koons

Floyd, there were 3 moons I could hold with direct vision immediately around Saturn with the Radians, the plossls direct with 1 and averted with the other 2. Maybe we should get you your own forum, "what Floyd likes" and we could all learn. I just checked the thread, Thanks

Which Dob would YOU get?

Posted By Michael Koons

Linton,
I'm retrograding.....had a 14.5 Obsession and a bit of aperature fever, bought a 16" Nightsky, well built, beautiful, flawless motions and optics. I'm now ordering a different structure to shave around 30 pounds of weight and 5-6 inches off the heigth at zenith. It seems as I grow older and time is more important, ease of use, convenience and safety have hit me. A 16" with the right structure could give 14.5" portability and weight, the same EP heigth at zenith and the aperature you crave. Not to start a flame war, but my mirror is a Pegasus from John Hall, I'd place it close to the Zambuto or Royce.
My 2 cents. Good luck, you are fortunate to be in a nice position to have to make this difficult decision.
Mike
PS!!!!This means viewing on the ground....flatfooted if you are 5'9" or more!!!!!!!!!!

Putting a Dob on a diet!

Posted By Michael Koons

Well,
3 weeks later and the Dob's diet is complete, I shaved 11 pounds off the mirror cell/box and another 5 off the groundboard/rocker. Additionally, I lost 2 inches off of my EP heigth. I'll post a few pics. If anyone wants help with their Nightsky, a router and sharp circular saw and drill are all you need. The 11 pounds reduced the weight of my mirror box/mirror/cell from 72 to 61 pounds, it is certainly welcome by my back.

Examining Bush's Lies

Posted By Michael Koons

Anyone remember Richark Clarke, the anti-terrorism guy, I believe he testified under oath that he was told to "find a link" after 9/11, by our commander in chief, with 2 aids as witnesses. Of course at the time he was burned at the stake. Maybe some people should revisit the issue. Sadly, I think if some of the suppositions are correct, this whole thing does smell, of treason.

Which to choose?!?!?!?!?!?!

Posted By Michael Koons

Jay,
I owned the 26 Nag, twice in fact, you may......want to try the Siebert Optics 32mm Observatory class, very good edge, nice in my 16 f4.5 Nightsky. I'll not part with it, it will give a slightly larger field than the Nag, with a huge 7mm exit pupil. Light as well.

TMB 105 LW vs SV-105 vs Tak FS-102II

Posted By Michael Koons

Dave,
will you be alt-az or equatorial, for planetary, obviously equatorial is nicer for tracking. If equatorial, the way the 105 LW rotates is by rotating the drawtube, you just lost your focus position, of course you could just rotate the diagonal assy. I like anything with the 3.5 feathertouch, you can rotate the whole darn thing and it handles the weight of the bino rig better than the 2 inch feathertouch. I've owned 2 TMB's, with the 2 and 3.5., and a 102 though not the short one. The optics are all great, the 3.5 feathertouch is awesome if you're not alt-az.

Darren,
I'd be interested in a pair of 12 TMB's.
