Venus as 2006-07 Evening StarPosted By Curt Renz |
Get ready for UFO reports: Venus is returning to visibility as the brilliant Evening Star following its Superior Conjunction behind the Sun on 2006 OCT 27. This coming evening apparition will be better than the previous one for northern hemisphere observers.
For Chicagoans observing at 30 minutes after sunset, I calculate that Venus will achieve its highest altitude of 31.7° on 2007 MAY 07. It will reach its Greatest Eastern Elongation from the Sun of 45.4° on JUN 08 at 22 hr CDT. Its greatest brilliance at magnitude -4.5 should be on JUL 14. Venus will begin its apparent retrograde motion on JUL 27 at 17 hr CDT. Then it will move into Inferior Conjunction between Earth and Sun on AUG 17.
I've created a panoramic graphic demonstrating Venus' position in Chicago's western sky 30 minutes after sunset from 2006 DEC 02 to 2007 AUG 01. Although it should well serve most northern hemisphere observers. It can be seen at http://www.curtrenz.com/astronomical.html
