PST double stack- can it be used as normal PST?

Posted By Steve Sands

Scott,

The PST single etalon scope is stand-alone. To double stack, you simply purchase an additional SM40 etalon which screws directly onto the end of the PST. Double stacking primarily increases detail on the solar disk, not prominences. Vendors sell these as two separate items: The PST and the SM40 etalon. I would suggest purchasing a PST and trying it out as a single stack first and then consider purchasing the double stack etalon later if you want to explore things further. That is the way I went when I was using the Coronado equipment. FWIW, I would also seriously consider the Lunt Solar System offerings. Their 60mm H-alpha scopes are fabulous! The increased aperture and image size is remarkable as compared to the PST and it might end up costing the same. The SM40 double stack etalon ain't cheap ($795!!). And I will say that the machining and finish on the Lunt scopes is second to none. One final thought: I am not one to dis companies, but, from experience, Meade Customer Service is, well, challenging at best if the need arises. Just food for thought.

Cheaper 2" Eyepieces?

Posted By Steve Sands

Thank you, everyone, for your excellent input and dialog! You are correct in stating that I should not eliminate 1.25" oculars for this project. The scope has a 2" JMI focuser with the 1.25" adapter, so that is not a problem. Also, you are correct that I failed to realize that the 35mm Panoptic will not barlow well without the additional interface.

I am still mulling through all of the responses, but think I have a good handle on where to take this. I certainly appreciate all of the expertise and experience folks have on AM!! grin

best eyepieces for standard denkmeier + C8

Posted By Steve Sands

I am with Don...The 24mm TV Panoptics are tough to beat. If you use the Power X Switch you get a nice magnification range. They just kind of fall out of the way and let you observe. I also like the Denk 21's and Denk 14's.

Stuffing behind secondary mirror...

Posted By Steve Sands

Hobby shops and places like WalMart carry batting. This is used for things like stuffing stuffed animals and pillows. Unfortunately you will probably have to purchase a bag of the stuff that would be enough for a thousand telescopes! Fortunately, it is cheap! grin Stay away from cotton because it will absorb moisture. The batting is some type of synthetic that will not absorb moisture. I have seen scopes where someone stuffed tissue paper in there to take up the space. That is really its only purpose - to fill in the void and keep the secondary firmly seated.

1887 Byrne Restoration

Wow! Very very nice, Dave! This is every bit as beautiful as the Alvan Clarks a friend of mine has restored. Something sexy about all of the bright brass! They don't make 'em like that any more! Thanks for sharing.

Blue level sponsors

Posted By Steve Sands

Greg,

Blue level sponsors are people who manufacturer what they sell (i.e. they are not resellers). They pay per ad or block of ads. Examples would be Floyd Blue and ADM Accessories. Both of these sponsors only sell items they themselves have manufactured. Although I believe they can also sell one-of-a-kind personal items as well.

This is how it is defined in the Terms of Service:

16.3. ATM/OEM Definition. You are an ATM/OEM for purposes of the sponsorship rates if you sell only the products that you make yourself.

Pictures - What am I doing wrong?

Posted By Steve Sands

Images should be a JPEG format with a size limit of 500MB. Try downsizing your images and see if that fixes the problem. Size is usually the issue.

On many occasions people will take images from websites and vendors to place their ads. They are typically low resolution and small. So basically what they post is what you see. My guess it that is what you are experiencing.
