US to Blow-Up EU satellites if used by Chinese ?

This was posted on another furum that I frequent. Anyone heard anything about this?

The Business weekly made a new report. The United States could attack Europe's planned network of global positioning satellites if it was used by a hostile power such as China. The paper reported a disagreement between EU and US officials over Galileo at a London conference which led to the threat to blow up the future satellites.

does this sound lika a new Star wars or Space wars ?

As some of you know there is a lot of international and jointed efforts in space. The Cassini-Huygens mission was a joint venture between the Europeans and the USA, with NASA launching the Cassini craft and the Eu giving 1 billion dollars to the mission. Also the Russians and Americans have worked closely on the Space Station mission of the past, and now the Chinese National Space Agency (CNSA) and ESA have worked together on the China-ESA Double Star project they were designed and lauch these spacecraft to study the Earth’s magnetosphere, in concert with ESA’s four spacecraft Cluster mission. The Double Star spacecraft are known as TC-1 and TC-2, or translating to English, as Explorer-1 and Explorer-2.

China last month became a partner in the Galileo program, which could help provide services such as communications for the 2008 Beijing Olympics but also has applications for strategic military use. According to a leaked US Air Force document written in August and obtained by The Business, Peter Teets, under-secretary of the US Air Force wrote: "What will we do 10 years from now when American lives are put at risk because an adversary chooses to leverage the global positioning system of perhaps the Galileo constellation to attack American forces with precision?" The paper also reported a disagreement between EU and US officials this month over Galileo at a London conference which led to the threat to blow up the future satellites. US officials have voiced fears that the rival system, which has also brought on board Russia and Israel in addition to China, could compromise US and Nato military operations which rely on GPS for navigation and combatant location and might also interfere with a classified Pentagon positioning system known as M-Code.

At one point, Washington suggested that Galileo was an unnecessary rival to GPS that merely duplicated the US system.
Analysts said the US threat to Galileo's future system exposed the true military value of the global navigation systems.
Previously, officials touted only the commercial benefit of Galileo, which is expected to tap into a burgeoning market for satellite positioning systems that doubled from 10 billion euros in 2002 to €20-billion in 2003. Brussels has also argued Galileo will create 150,000 new jobs across the European bloc.

Bush to oust Castro????

Hi all,

Listening to the news on my way to work this morning, there wwas a segment about Bu$h'$ campaigning in Florida over the weekend. They played part of his speech in which he stated "and in the next 4 years we will ensure that freedom and democracy will be brought to Cuba" (as close to the actual words as I can remember)

Given that Bu$h'$ idea of bringing democracy to the middle east was to invade Iraq, (not to remove WMD but to remove Saddam as we are now told) does this mean that the invasion plans for Cuba are already drawn up????? shocked

Interesting comment from the "Votemaster"

Hi everyone,

For me, the most unfathomable thing I have witnessed since living in the USA is the almost total ignorance of Americans of how the rest of the world percieves the USA. As an Englishman who has lived for most of his life in Australia, travelled to several european and south-east asian countries, and who has numerous friends from many other countries, I have a pretty good idea of what the world thinks of the USA, and it is not pretty!

He is an American, currently living in Holland. His comments deserve close examination by all Americans.

"George Bush is the world's playground bully. The world sees him--and by inference, America--as arrogant, self-centered, and mean. I spoke to Americans from dozens of countries at the DA caucus. Everyone told the same story--the world hates America. When talking to foreigners, I can tell them about the Bill of Rights or freedom or World War II, or whatever I want, but all they see is this big, stupid, arrogant, playground bully and a stolen election in Florida last time."

To much of the rest of the world, Bu$h and his cohorts symbolise everything that the rest of the world dislikes about the USA. I would invite people to read his full article. It is very close to the truth.

Religion the divider?

Hi all,

Just read this election analysis on the BBC news website. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3973197.stm

"Religion - rather than class, ethnic origin or education - has become the key determinant of voting in the 2004 presidential race, according to an exit poll conducted by the Associated Press news agency."

Seems like religion and morals played an important part in Bush's win. I wonder what this will do for the abortion, homosexual marriage debates?

Hi Bill,

I would not consider myself a "Bible Scholar", 8O however I will have a go at answering your question.

These names are used interchangeably, and relate to the various way he was addressed.

Jesus of Nazareth:- This simply means that he is the Jesus who lived in the town of Nazaeth

Christ:- This is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew "messiah" which means "anointed one".

The Christ Child:- This means the child who was anointed, and refers to Jesus before he was fully grown. (Not found in the Bible IIRC)

Jesus Christ:- This is not a name per se, but menas Jesus the anointed one.

In hebrew literature, the one who was to come from God and redeem mankind was called God's anointed. Later in jewish history ~100 BC it came to mean the one from God who would restore the jewish nation to world supremency and a return to the glory days of David and Solomon.

Software question

Hi all,

I am introducing a new astronomy course at the college where I teach and much of the course will be about CCD imaging and processing. For my own processing and analysis, I have used MegaFix and CCDSoft. However MegaFix will not work in XP and for "pretty pictures" CCDSoft's processing is very limited. So I am looking for something else.

My question is, if you had the choise, would you purchase Maxim-DL/CCD or Mira?

Rice as new SS

Hi all,

Now that Powell has decided to resign and Condoleezza Rice will take over his job as Secretary of State, I am interested in the thoughts of how you think she will go.

From what I have seen, Powell has built up a fair amount of respect around the world for the way he has done his job. Particularly in the middle east. While Rice appears to be a well-educated and determined woman, I wonder if she will be able to generate the same respect, particularly given the attitude of so many muslim nations to women.

Any thoughts?
