How to Drill Accurate Holes?

Posted By Rex Cox

Stuart St. Clair said:

I'm planning to work on my 16" dob project tomorrow. I need to drill several holes in wood pieces. I have a drill press, but I'm not very knowledgeable about how to use it well. Many times I find that my holes are a bit off from the mark that I was aiming for. Does anyone have any tips on getting the hole to be centered exactly on the mark? I'm just thinking of holes from say 1/8" to 3/8" diameter drilled with regular bits. Thanks!

Take a center punch or nail and very lightly tap a small pilot hole for the drill bit to guide into. Before turning your drill press on, lower the bit to the hole to make sure the tip hits the mark.

Any vintage Audio fans here?

Nice looking setup Ralph. I always wanted a reel-to-real deck, but never got one.

I had a Nakamichi cassette deck at one time (not a Dragon) that made great sounding tapes, though. I also had a pair or Norman Labs speakers that I loved. I now have a pair of B&W 602's that are awesome, considering their relatively small size and cost. I also have a 30-year old Pioneer SX-780 reciever that is still going strong. I bought it after I graduated from high school. I'll probably take the plunge and get a new reciever sometime this year and sell the Pioneer. Rounding things out, I had an SAE equalizer and a crappy Pioneer PL-112 turntable. I no longer have the SAE or the turntable. I sold my 600+ album collection earlier this year. That was really hard to do.

Cleaning a large mirror

That's gotta be kinda nerve wracking. I'd hate to drop that mop handle and scratch it (wonder how big a scratch has to be to matter on a mirror that size?). I wonder what they're using to clean it?

best focuser for big dob

Ditto the Feathertouch. I have them an all my scopes. They're second to none. Werner, whom I beleive to be the owner of the company, really supports his products with great service.

telescope for my 10 year old

Get an 8" Orion or Zhumell dobsonian. It's easier for a kid to point, and has more apperature so you and your 10 year-old will be able to see more things like nebula, globular clusters, and some galaxies. The 8" scope lets you use 2" eyepieces. It's a good scope for a kid to grew into. We got my nephew one some years back when he was 9 or 10. He's 14 now and still uses it.

Been there and done it.

Saving Paper

Posted By Rex Cox

I certainly think we should at least work to minimize unnecessary paper use. Junk mail is a a good place to start. How many junk mail flyers get mailed out just to get one sale? It has to be a hugely disproportionate ratio. It would be nice if there were an opt-out program like there is for phone soliciting.
