first light

Posted By Chris Nardone

Bought new setup and have been decimated by clouds for weeks. It was supposed to rain last night, but I took a peek before bed. There was an opening around orion so I raced to set up. No polar alignment (because of clouds) other than facing north and adjusting based on drift of Orion. Finally got it close enough for starshoot autoguider to start tracking. Kept shots to 30sec to minimize field rotation. Onyx 80mm ed guided through 6" SCT both side by side on CG-5. Stacked with DSS no clue what I'm doing there. All comments appreciated. Very little experience here.

40-30 sec, 10-45 sec, 10-90 sec, 40 darks
42.5 minutes total. ISO 800 unmodded 40D.
Celestron Onyx 80ED
My second attempt. Would I keep getting more detail with more exp time?

Second DSO

Not sure if seeing was poor or if 80mm scope was the limiting factor. I really hoped for better results.

moon composite of 30 shots

Posted By Chris Nardone

Took 30 eyepiece projection shots of the moon and assembled them in ps. Ended up with a 11100x7700, 85 megapixel shot. I don't have any way to post it here so sadly here is a resize.
Lots of compression artifacts. Original was amazing.

cg-5 mount for a c-8?

Posted By Chris Nardone

I had a CG-5. I was pretty happy with it, but I went the opposite way and sold it and bought a fork mount. I now have a 1995 Ultima 8" PEC. The CG-5 had it's advantages, especially with an illuminated polar axis scope. Polar aligning was easy. It also allows for different OTA's although I never had any. I took some pictures with it, but it was shakey. I think I recall about 7-8 seconds dampening time after bumping it. The fork mount I have is much more solid.
I would not recommend to you to make that particular switch. Unless you can afford a little better GEM than a CG-5, I don't think you are going to come out ahead.

Thanks for info. I'll go with the 7 x 50's.

Best recommendations for exposure times

Posted By Chris Nardone

What will you see... From my limited experience it could be anything from a black print because the film didn't quite catch that 20 year old advance ring, to a washed out one because of too much light pollution. Just kidding, but both have happened to me. I think you're going to be suprised to find that you could have made the exposure even longer, but it should look pretty good. I believe you will only have a portion of the galaxy though because your field of view will be too small.
I can't ever wait that long for astropics. I always go to 1 hour photo and just get the negs and then scan them at home.
Good luck

Best recommendations for exposure times

Oops, I didn't answer your question. I would recommend 400 speed film and 90 minutes from a dark sight. But I don't have an ST-4 so I try to stick to < F/5.0 for DSO's.

ST80 Telephoto lense for Canon EOS( problem..)

Posted By Chris Nardone

I just bought a used ST-80 here on astromart. I han't tried epp yet, but I read your post and just did. I had the same problem. Then I remembered something that I had thought was strange. I couldn't even see through an eyepiece without the image erecting prism in place. I didn't try it, but I am guessing that you must use the erecting prism when you try to do epp. I also had the same problem with prime focus. I had to extend the focuser completely out. Anyway, I'm bored I guess I'll run out and try epp with the prism on.
Be right back....
