Cooper's Hawk?Posted By Gerald Kuchera |
Looks like a Coop to me.
Here's a great way to tell the difference. Works especially well when they fly.
We watch thousands of Coopers and SharpShins migrate, and find it easier to ID them when they're in flight.
Coopers have Long tail with curved ends. White terminal is broad and easy to see (Crisp Coopers). Sharpies are not as long and square.
Coop's head is larger and extend their heads when in flight, silhouette looks like a cross. Sharpies appear to shrug their shoulders so head is subtended below them
Shapies Shrug.
Cooper wings are long with the tip rounded (curved) flaps are slower, countable--flaps are stiff and determined.
Sharpies wing flaps are much faster, hardly countable, when gliding tends to hold tail up above head.Snappie Sharpie.
So, Curved Cooper, Crisp Cooper, Crossing Cooper, makes it easy to remember.
Sharpies Shrug, Snappie Sharpie by way of contrast was to remember the difference on the wing.
