Hi Everyone,

Normally I just ignore richies rantings but this one I have to respond to.

All richie does here is show his utter and total ignorance of Australia. Unlike the US, Australia is serious about controlling the Coronavirus. The borders are closed. So no-one can enter or leave without special permission. Masks are compulsory for most situations. As a result, Australia has minimal infections and deaths compared to the US and the economy is doing well. That of my home state, WA, has been booming!

Despite this, some very selfish people, mainly in Victoria and NSW, have been protesting about lockdowns and mask-wearing. This has caused infections to surge in those 2 states.

The video shows one such person refusing to wear a mask and then resisting arrest and assaulting police. You would find that virtually all Aussies would fully support the actions of those police.

Once again richie shows his total ignorance of Australia.

In my state we are totally free to do anything we want because the borders are closed and so the virus is virtually nonexistent there. No new cases again yesterday. So we can do whatever we want with no restrictions.

In the last election, the liberals tried to make it all about anti-lockdowns, anti-masks, etc, (sound familiar?). As a result they suffered the greatest defeat in WA election history. Down to only 2 members in the lower house and losing their official party status.

We are extremely happy with the aggressive stance the Premier took at the start of the pandemic. It kept our state virtually covid-free, booming economy, and no restrictions now.

Once again richie you show your appalling ignorance.

I could take the time to show you your fallacies, but unlike you, I have a real job!

Suffice to say, you said "Australia"; meaning the entire country. I showed how wrong you were. Also, you make bald statements regarding Australia, yet by your own admission, you know virtually nothing about the country.

Regarding exercise for one hour a day with one other person, does the US prison system really allow mass murderers to exercise with another person up to 5 km from the prison???? If not, then you cannot compare the 2.

Finally, in your attempt to slur Australia as a prison colony, you show your ignorance of your own country. America was a prison colony long before Australia!

Hi Greg,

Convicts from England were sentenced to transportation to Georgia for several decades, mostly to be used as labour.

Once a group of terrorists (as the British called them) overthrew British rule, England had to find somewhere else to send their convicts. The place chosen was originally Botany Bay, but on arrival they found Port Jackson, AKA Sydney much more suitable.

The system for Australia was the same as for Georgia. Therefore if Australia is said to have been a penal colony, so was America.

While it might be argued that not all of America had convicts, neither did all states in Australia.

So, I don't come here much anymore.  I do have a soft spot in my heart for the forum of the old days.  It was a lot of fun and you could learn a lot from the many different perspectives.  I still enjoy hearing what Jim, James, Gregg, Brian, Dave, Rod, Mel and others post on various topics.  I miss so many people who used to post a lot, most recently Russ.  Nowadays though, your venom here just make me tired.  I get it that Rod is pretty toxic at times too, and he does post a lot, but there is a qualitative difference between your posts and Rod's.  It is easy for anyone but you to see.  You will disagree of course, that is expected and predictable, I am way past caring.  

Some times if I am in a bad mood I'll engage you.  But that exercise always leaves me feeling dirty and low.  So it goes.  I believe you have effectively and perhaps intentionally killed the forum, to feed some strange narcissistic impulse of your own that is completely beyond my comprehension. 

You and I might get along fine in real life.  I would hope so.  But this medium brings out the worst in you.  Of course you will disagree and draw bogus equivalences.  Some things never change.

I  hear you on this Jim. Although I do not always agree with you, I find that your posts are always well written and well argued.

On the other hand, Richie is so obnoxious he is driving people away from what used to be an interesting discussion group with his constant name-calling and vitriol. I almost always just skip his posts these days.

In the federal election held yesterday, the liberals were decimated, losing around 20 seats. In my state of WA, the swing against the liberals was more than 11%, unprecedented in federal elections. WA was considered a liberal stronghold. Not any more. In the eastern states many seats held by the liberals were lost to independents. Again, totally unprecedented in federal elections. Never before have so many independents been elected.

The next few months and years could be interesting.

Mostly correct. In Australia, the previous government was a coalition of the liberal party and the National party. They are roughly equivalent to your republicans, and just like your republicans, it has moved from centre-right to far-right under SoMo, especially the national party section.  The labor party is similar to your democrats.  Most of the independents were formerly liberals to rejected the move to the far right and who campaigned strongly on tacking climate change, women's equality, and integrity in parliament, all of which SoMo strongly opposed.  Palmer could easily be referred to as an Aussie version of Trump. Another nut-case is Pauline Hansen. She is a good comparison to Lauren Boebert.

A couple of other comments. richie, you were correct in that we got rid of the liberals because we were sick of how they were running things. However, you really did put your ignorance on show. In Australia, the liberals are the right-wingers, and under SoMo and Joyce, they went hard right. As a result, they lost much of their heartland and safest seats to independents. Also worth pointing out that labor also lost a seat to an independent. The link below is an excellent analysis of the election.

In a nutshell, the voters were angry with how the liberals were treating issues such as women and climate change, and sick of the BS coming from the government. It is shame that independents have no chance in the US.

One other point richie, you really should try to educate yourself more. You claim that what happens in Aussie does not matter to you. It should. Australia is a major trading partner with the US and extremely important to the US interests in the Pacific and in countering China. Have you not heard of AUKUS or "The Quad"?
