I've been using a Mewlon 210 atop a GM-8 for the last year or two. No problem whatsoever in handling the Mewlon. I'm strictly a visual observer, so can't address the suitability of this combination for astrophotography, but for visual use it's fine. I just picked up a Mewlon 250 and Gll, so the Mewlon 210 will soon be for sale on Astromart.

The Unistar mount attaches to either the GM8 or G11 tripod using the same Losmandy adaptor.

The Unistar holds the Mewlon 250 securely atop the Losmandy G11 tripod. Last night I used this rig to view M13 at 250-400x. There were no jitters when focusing, and I was able to keep M13 in the FOV center while manually slewing the Mewlon.

I too am an imaging newbie and use a Canon Digital Rebel 350. I had this very same question and elected to use Images Plus. The tutorials that accompany IP are excellent. They walk you through the various aspects of image processing in a clear, understandable manner and greatly facilitate your acquiring essential processing skills. You won't go wrong with IP and there is a very active Yahoo group of IP users.

DSLRFocus or other focusing help?

I use ImagesPlus rather than DSLRFocus with my digital rebel. I assume the DSLRFocus routine is similar to that of ImagesPlus. I would never go back to the Hartmann mask I once used. It was useful for getting close, but with ImagesPLus, I hit the sweet spot, no question. And hitting the sweet spot as opposed to "getting close" make a large, noticeable difference in the resulting images.
